Actually, you can do a comparison and contrast [essay]. We composed them all the time in Catholic high school while many of our peers in public schools were doing fill-in-the-blank question sheets.

Comparing and contrasting is essential for critical thinking. Brazilian and American and Muslim and atheist and drug addict and prostitute are all categorizations [in the lexicon of the social science of sociology]. A "category" being people that share some basic similarities but don't necessarily know or interact with each other. A "group" in the professional vocabulary of sociology is basically defined as people that share some basic similarities and know each other or interact with one another.

One can also fill multiple categories: e.g.,: Brazilian, Christian, mixed-race, woman, prostitute, drug addict, bisexual, liberal.

If we were to propose Brazilianism flows from being Brazilian, Colombianism flows from being Colombian, and Americanism flows from being American, you could arguably compare and contrast all three categories with one another. Finding where they share commonality and where they differ.

Certain categories like drug addict [or "druggie" or "junkie"] are caricatured at times. Certain ones like homosexual [or gay] are celebrated. Certain ones like American are projected as superior.

Prostitution (excepted the street solicitation of) is legal in Brazil and that is but one cultural thing or cultural value that a person can contrast and compare Brazil with Colombia or any other given nation.

Edit to add:

Why it is so difficult to find "category" or "categorization" listed in the glossary of online sociological material, is beyond me. But yes, a Christian or Brazilian or woman or drug addict or homosexual or conservative are all "categories."

One can glean insight into "categorization" from this short essay online. I did not read 99% of the essay but my quick skim showed me whoever composed it has a sociological knowledge of "categorization" as it differs from "groups."

Categorization in the Media essay | Sociology Essay Help, Sociology Research Paper Writing, Term Papers and Dissertations

Quote:
Categorization, the process by which distinct entities are treated as equivalent, is one of the most fundamental and pervasive cognitive activities. It is fundamental because categorization allows us to understand and make predictions about objects and events in our world.
Quote:
The purpose of this study was to explore Caucasian viewers’ identification and misidentification of criminals featured in a newscast. Based on prior research in social cognition, it was predicted that viewers’ identification memory would vary as a function of the race of the criminal suspect featured, the race of the foils, and the viewer’s endorsement of anti-Black attitudes.

Perhaps the most striking finding in this study concerned the increased misidentification of African American foils months after participants had viewed a news story featuring a Caucasian suspect.
Quote:
Stage 1: Reality. Media treatments of societal groups and their individual members usually have some basis in reality, although it may not reflect the vast majority of that group. Some Jews are skilled in business. Some Muslims are fanatical terrorists. Some Christians are anti-Semitic. Some blacks are on welfare or are good athletes. Some white men can’t dunk a basketball. And some Italian Americans have been involved in crime, as have some Americans of most backgrounds.
Bear in mind that sociology as an academic branch is dominated almost exclusively by social and political liberals. So, little of it carries a social and politically conservative bias.

Eh... you got me there... history might be a better academic subject. Actually, the two used together can be helpful to any historian I would think.

But never mind that.

I do agree with you that Brazil is different in terms of its general cultural views regarding the expression of human sexuality.

Currently, in the United States a black woman can not give birth to a white baby, a homosexual having sex with women can't make him heterosexual. However, a white woman can give birth to a black baby and a heterosexual man having just one sexual experience with a man pretty much makes him gay. "One drop sexuality" you might call it.

You should look at the porn video (A Ghetto Gagger Makes a Mistake) I mentioned. Because another cultural trait is that the young Black-American woman in that video being degraded by multiple White-American men would almost certainly (99% odds) hate me, or look down on me, and put white men above me. If I proclaimed I was gay, proud to be gay, had zero interest in women, then she might like me and purse me as gay men are more or less socially cool. So, she'd seek a gay man as a husband possibly. However, she will almost certainly hate a heterosexual male that rejects all future sex with men, even one that courts her and buts her gifts. She may really hate him then. If she does not hate him she will be scarred to date him publicly because there is more social honor in the United States four her to be on all fours getting kicked in her a** on camera by white men pouring grape soda over her and wiping her hair up with **** than to be with a man that has had only a few brief sexual experience with men.

America no more likes the "passing 'gay' man" than it used to like the "passing as white" light-skinned man that had a black grandfather. America likes clear cut boxes to put people in and does not like "sneakers" sneaking into their little "cool crowds."

I think both a Brazilian and Colombian woman would find this cultural trait of Americans and American women absurd.

I like that some Brazilian women leave their body hair without shaving or waxing. It is so sexy. I wish more American women did this. Shame. It feels so sensual to the touch!

It's a great country. It's very beautiful and has nice weather.

Keep in mind that there is more to Brazil than Rio and Sao Paulo. We're almost as big as the US and have tons of cities, and everyone outside of Brazil (including other South Americans!) only want to go there. I admit, I love Rio and it's a lot of fun whenever I go there. Not a fan of Sao Paulo, though. Many smaller Brazilian cities are pretty safe. My home city is probably one of the quietest places I can think of.

No one will care if you're not white. African-American singers are pretty popular here among Brazilians of all races. White Brazilians aren't as racist as white people from the American South.

My town has a lot of black and mulatto people. They're much better represented here than in most other parts of my home state. I've actually got a mulatto girlfriend. Most of my town is white, though - mainly Portuguese, but there are also Italians, Germans, Poles (like me), and many others. It's mainly Catholic, though we also have evangelical Protestants, Lutherans, Mormons, Orthodox Christians, and Muslims. The Lutherans are mainly German, the Orthodox Christians are mostly Ukrainian, Russian, Lebanese, or Syrian, and the Muslims are mostly Lebanese or Syrian.

Here's my city's official website: Prefeitura Municipal de Paranaguá (It's in Portuguese.)
