Hi, everybody. I'm from central Texas. I am currently going through some interviews for future job opportunities and one of the interviews is going to be in Anchorage. It's scheduled around Oct. 20. All my life, I've never really been away from Texas very far and I really don't have any idea what the real "winter" is like. The job interviews I'm going for is medical/health related and I'd like to dress very professional(suits, etc), but I have no clue what to buy or pack since where I live has not snowed for the past 10 years. I heard Anchorage normally gets its first snow around that time of the year, so I was wondering if anybody could help me figure out what outfits I need to prepare? If I was going out to a social event with business casual dress code, what do I need to bring/wear in order to keep warm but also looking fashionable? My husband and I also planned a couple extra days to just drive around the town. We normally pack light during travel. I'd appreciate any tips on how to pack multi-purpose clothing! Thanks in advance for your time and suggestion!

It's not that cold by then. Just bring a warm jacket, gloves and a stocking cap. For that short of a trip I wouldn't go out and spend a ton of money on winter clothes. It's not even long underwear weather then.

October is the transition period. Could be Water or Snow, or could be a mixture of both. Point is it will likely be a wet, muddy, slushy, sloppy mess, so take whatever precautions you need to keep from messing up your good clothes. Also, you will need to learn the art of getting in and out of the car without touching any part of the outside surfaces - leaving brown mud smudges on the back of your pants.

When I moved here last October, it didn't snow until mid November. I was wearing slacks to work with a sweater. I don't think I really started wearing a heavy coat till November. If you venture out of Anhcorage, it might be a different story!

I don't usually switch into my professional wools until November, so am still wearing fall work clothes. Any of your business suits should be fine for an interview. You don't have to worry much about walking from a rental car in the parking lot into an interview. If you have a trench coat (like the traditional London Fog) or a nice jacket that would go well over lighter business casual clothes.

Wear whatever you would wear for cold weather in Texas. You'll only be outside for the time it takes to walk fom the car to the building. The heat will be on. You'll be fine.
