we have raised and acquired many dogs, given respect, love and guidance a dog will do anything to please it's owner including not barking on command....animals need to communicate just like humans do....by barking....we talk they bark!
I do not abuse dogs, but I do not pamper them either. I am the master of my home, not the dog. I do not give in to the whims of my pets and allow them to control me. I control them.

I agree. I have had very quiet dogs and very vocal dogs, and the breed did not matter. Although, it has been my experience that females are more vocal than males.

Agreed. I haven't lived in a city since childhood.

If you are seeking peace and quiet, it usually helps if you are not in a city.

We had more problems in Chugiak with chronic barkers, especially during the sleeping hours than we ever have had in downtown Anchorage. We can hear birds, that is if one of the three airports isn't launching it's fleet...

You tried to adopt a Blue Tick hound, age 2 from the pound. That dog was a barker, howler, you name it. At the age of 2 with no adult in the house full time to work in training, plus 2 cats (should have known better) we were not the right family for him.

While he was here, he taught my Pointer to bark. Thank Goodness, Crash is not a barker and in fact is quite unsure of other dogs barking and comes inside rather than joining in the "conversation" but he now will bark occasionally in the house at random times. Scares the crap out of me when he does that. Never barked before we had the Hound.

Anyway, that's my story.

Never said anything about pampering animals..."master" is a control issue...harmonious living is the key...mutual respect will get you more companionship from an animal than anything.

Well...dogs are hard wired to exist in packs, with an alpha at the head of the pack. A lot of problems with dogs come from that not being clearly defined. Domestic dogs still have about 99 percent of the DNA makeup of wild wolves -- pack structure is deep in their genetic code. Without an alpha, or with an inconsistent one, they become anxious and unstable.
