My family uses AlaskaUSA. We are currently stationed in Virginia. I use their online services, easy to use.

WHATEVER bank you choose - DO NOT use Wells Fargo - they are ruthless in their pursuit to take you money, especially for a college student starting out - whether it be high interest rates, bunk "fees", and false charges for "promotions" you don't want - they also have incredibly rude and unhelpful customer service personell, at the call center, and especially at the credit card center. Warning: Stay away from Wells Fargo bank!!!

For years I banked with AK. USA. This was until I recently sold my home and their mortage department left me in a huge limbo mess, as they would not disclose my buyer's status until the day before closing. I was very upset and some of their top mortage department folks seemed to enjoy the stress I was under. I have since found out they knew the status of their buyer days earlier but withheld it from me out of spite, I can only assume. I'm in the process of moving all my accounts due to it. This scenario was a major let down as I really enjoyed banking with AK USa over the years.
Their customer service and professionalism has decreased these past few years in my opinion. I'm moving to an out of state bank, offering higher yields and loans to another local Alaskan bank. We shall see how it goes. I also don't see them as fiscally safe in the current environment. Remember, FDIC only protects you up to $100,000K. Most national banks have added protections that exceed the standard FDIC. Last edited by alaskaboy; 06-19-2008 at 04:49 PM. |

Northrim bank is a really great bank. They will reimburse your atm fees if you use another bank's atm. I have never heard of that anywhere else. Also, their customer service is great! I can attest that there are no Bank of America Branches in Alaska. There IS one atm at the 5th Ave Mall. You cannot make deposits at it though.

AlaskaUSA is a wonderful credit union...
Avoid Denali Alaskan. They screwed my account up BAD. I was on vacation and they took $800 out of my account because someone typed in the wrong account # (someone with a close account number cashed a check). I called them and told them I was out of state and hadn't done that. (This took my account down to less than $100...luckily I'd already paid for the hotel)! They said they'd get it fixed as quickly as possible (knowing I'm out of the state and all). It took them OVER a WEEK to fix it!! They admitted they were wrong, but - too little, too late - I was already BACK from my vacation that they had ruined. ![]() That's just my experience with them...nearly everyone else I know who's *had* an account there has had a screw up, too (bank's fault). |
