My husband and I are moving out of his parents house to Anchorage. We don't have any furniture so I was wondering if it would cost the same to purchase that stuff at the PX in Anchorage than it would at a PX in Washington State. I heard the cost of living is more expensive there, but because its an army post, shouldnt the prices be the same everywhere? If so, do you know if Fort Richardson PX carries that kind of stuff?

The prices are very similar. Some things are more expensive than what you are used to ( e.g. cigarettes, soda, produce ), but packaged and canned goods are in my opinion the same prices. Furniture wise the prices are close, but the selection is not that great here....
So I would buy my furniture at Bailey's if I were you or maybe Craigslist, you get a better price, guaranteed. Also Bailey's has a 12 months same as cash deal, if you get approved w/ their financing department.

I have not been impressed at all with the furniture on base.
I'd buy from costco is you want new and shop Craig's List if you don't care if it's used. Also Garage Sales are pretty good here.

Have you tried asking the PX where you live at the moment? Usually they would know best about that. It's hard to answer your question as I haven't been to the PX in that state...

Thanks everyone.
Are shipping costs typically higher? Lets say I bought a nightstand or something off ebay...

It depends on who you buy it from. Some places treat Alaska like it's a foreign country and charge a fortune for shipping via 2nd day air. Others charge a standard rate and ship via USPS. If you don't like the shipping terms from a vendor, another likely will offer a better deal. For big bulky items, you can have the item shipped to one of the barge companies in the Seattle area which will in some cases deliver it to your door.

For what it's worth, I would probably never do that. The shipping will be crazy!! I think Costco ships for free but I have never ordered from Costco.com before. Some of there larger items are not available in Alaska or Hawaii, probably due to the high shipping costs.

We have a lot of stores in the area that will give you a large variety to choose from. Unless you get a killer deal ($5) the shipping will probably be more then the dresser is worth.

Don't forget the Barge takes on average 2 weeks.

Online amazon only. Here's a little story: We moved here last September, so in October when it was time for Halloween decoration I hadn't been here long enough to know about the shipping prices, yet. So I found a great house decoration kit online at Target ( it was online only ) for about $ 30. Guess what? NO shipping to Alaska or Hawaii, couldn't even do site to store shipping. ( Walmart does site to store btw ). I ended up going through 15 online sites to the same kit for a close price and paid $ 10 for shipping. It was only box, nothing major which is the worst about all this!
