As I am preparing the same trip thru Canada to Alaska this summer I will chime in on the firearms part... There is no way to bring a restricted firearm thru Canada if you are on 'vacation.' The only way I could do it was if I was moving to AK and bringing thru one-way into Alaska... House hunting and job hunting don't count either HAS to be a 'permanent move.'

Ok, so tomorrow I finalize the dates for starting in ANC. Looks like I will be arriving in ANC in the first half of August. Any last words of wisdom?

I plan to drive the ALCAN from California to Anchorage. Milepost in hand. Passport mailed off via expedited service. Trying to get a furnished place in ANC off of Craigslist. If not, I'll stay a couple weeks in a GOOD hotel in ANC. Anyone have any suggestions for a good hotel? The $900 a month hotels on craigslist are all bedbug infested, crack house, rent-by-the-hour places.

As always, thanks for the help.

Right now all I can say is that if you want to drive 40 mph on your drive down or up the ALcan then get OUTTA everyone else's way. So frusturated with old people in 60's models VW busses driving down the middle of the highway not letting anyone pass cause they are engaged in bird watching while driving.

If the RCMP guy passes you and flips you the finger when he goes by you know you're going toooooo slow. Why he didn't stop you and write you a ticket is beyond me.

It is actually an entertaing drive with plenty of colorful charcters along the way. I think the guy that took the cake was the fellow from Missouri just north of Dease Lake on the Cassiar. The road has NO shoulders at all. Him and his wife were driving a Ford F-350 diesel super cab pulling a big honkin 5th wheel travel trailer.

I noticed the rig cause they were stopped in the road with their hazard lights on. This was at the end of a sharp downhill curve. I stopped cause I thought something was wrong. Pulled up alongside and the wife montioned to the back of the truck. Saw the husband coming out of the trees with a chainsaw and an arm load of wood.

I asked him if he was okay. He said they were just fine but needed some firewood for later on that evening. Said he hadn't seen anyone else on the road for about 15 minutes so he thought this would be a good place to stop. I didn't even reply. Just left SMDH......

Girthy, it is common to actually stop to see if people are okay when they're on the side of the road if it looks like they're in trouble. If you have room, do carry a full size spare tire with you, way better than the smaller spare tire that comes with most vehicles. Get yourself a floor jack, too if you get a flat. They work way better than the crappy bottle jack that's in your car/truck.

my son just made that drive two weeks ago - in a Prius, loaded to the gills with stuff, and two dogs on board. Sailed through the border crossing at Sumas with no issues. Made it from Portland OR to Quesnel BC the first day, and on the 2nd stayed in Beaver Creek, YT (yes, he was hauling @ss). Made Anchorage the 3rd day. He said the road was great, saw lots of wild life. This was his 3rd time to make the trip from the lower 48.

One thing I'll remind you of - you might want to buy international cell phone service from your provider so you can use it in Canada... there are places with wifi if you happen to have a "smart phone" so you can still make reservations and send e-mails if necessary. I was shocked the night my son "face-timed" me from Quesnel since he had wifi - it was really cool since I didn't expect to hear from him until he got into Alaska.

Oh - also - buy gas when you see it. Never hurts to drive on the top half of the tank.

Good luck, best wishes on your journey. Can't wait till its my turn to move to AK.
