My family is moving to Anchorage shortly and I'm wondering if there are beach parks or areas where we could go beachcombing? I grew up in Vancouver and really miss that - I'd love to get my young kids interested in it.

Thanks.

Anywhere along the beaches on the entire Kenai Peninsula are pretty good walking and beach combing. I'd stay clear of the muddy flats around Anchorage. Been more than a few that have got stuck in the mud and drowned in the incoming tide. Seward, Homer, Anchorpoint, Ninilchik, Kasiloff, Kenai or North Kenai Beaches are rock, sand and gravel beaches. Homer has lot's of star fish and kelp and wiggly critters in the rocks and pools. Kids love that stuff.

Beachcombing around Anchorage isn't a wise thing to do. Anchorage has a 27 foot difference between high tide and low tide, and tourists who venture too far out on the mudflats during low tide often don't make it back to shore in time.

As a result of such a high tidal difference, Turnagain Arm gets a "tidal bore" once a month that ranges from 6 to 8 feet high, 10 miles wide, and moving between 10 to 15 mph for a distance of 40 to 50 miles.

Thanks for the advice - wow, that's some tidal surge! I'll be sure to warn my family of that!

Indeed! Tourists aren't the only critters to be taken by surprise by the tides in Turnagain Arm. Every few years beluga and/or killer whales get beached as the tide pulls out. They usually don't survive by the time the next high tide reaches them.

On the south and west side of the Kenai Pennisula they have lovely beaches, from the black gravel/sand beaches in Seward to the white beaches along the Homer Spit. You could fish for salmon from the shore while the kiddies play in the tide pools.
