Just to clarify... The Denali highway is NOT the road into Denali Park... The Denali Highway is a mostly unpaved road between Cantwell on the Parks Highway & Paxson on the Glenn Highway. For people wanting to do a loop without going all the way to Fairbanks, it seems like a good choice. But it's unpaved and generally in rough condition. Most major car rental companies forbid their cars traveling on it. If you decided to risk it, plan on at least an hour of car cleaning before returning the car or it'll be obvious you took it somewhere it shouldn't have gone.

It is a beautiful drive though...

I would strongly recommend getting a copy of The MILEPOST: Alaska Travel Guide and Trip Planner for your trip. In my opinion it's the best guide to all the Alaskan roads. You can order from them, or find an older edition on Amazon. You can also pick up a copy when you get here.

@ trlhiker - thanks for your insight on whittier tour & sled dog. The kenai cruise tour of 9+ hours ends on Aug 26 and i am just left with option of taking 8+ tour ( which does not stop at an island ). So, is there any major attraction through 26 glaciers cruise tour in whittier i shouldn't be missing? IF so, i will skip that and rather stick to kenai tour alone.

Appreciate your responses.[/quote]

The whittier tour was a disappointment for me, didn't see much of anything including marine life. There is nothing else in whittier to do otherwise. Stick with the seward tour. there are lots of other things to do in seward including the aquarium, exit glacier, lotsof hikes, and the sled dog tour I mentioned.
There is a nice wildlife sanctuary on the way to Portage Glacier and Seward that you can visit. they rehabilitate injured and orphaned animals.
The Tram that goes up Mt. Alyeska that I would recommend especially on a nice day.

I would recommend making a small pitstop in Hope, just to enjoy the view and maybe have a pint. There's not much there commercially but what's there otherwise is certainly worth the visit. I'm not very familiar with much of the traveling areas yet but everyone I've spoken with that's ever visited Hope has fallen in love. I've been there twice and camped there for 3 days the last time I stayed. There is a small hotel if memory serves correctly.

@sunnybaby - that's a good idea. I'm not the OP but Hope is one of the places we haven't visited yet. Will be in Anchorage at the end of August and I think I'll talk DH into a road trip. Thank you for the reminder about Hope. Looks like a great place to go.
