Smile A Special Trip...

hi! I'm just conducting a wee bit of research. My boyfriend and I are planning on getting married, and my life-long dream (thanks, Northern Exposure!) is to see Alaska. And, my guy has NEVER SEEN SNOW!
I am just tying to find out how much a 1-way ticket to Anchorage is (looks like about 700$ for the two of us) and what would be the best way for us to drive back to Ft. Lauderdale? Would we need passposrts to go thru Canada? What if I am bringing a puppy back with us? How long should I realistically plan for it to take us to drive back in a rental? It would definetely be the trip of a lifetime! any suggestions on where to start? All replies heart-felt-edly appreciated!

Roxy & Jan

Northern Exposure wasn't filmed in Alaska.

I'd buy a car here and drive it out. Renting and driving it to Florida has got to be spendy. Yes get passports. Dog will need shot records and a barf bag! Driving from Anchorage to Florida...with photo stops or hotels for the night...probably 6 or 7 days.

You can save a lot of money buy going to Washington instead; that's where NE was filmed.

You're flying up and driving back? If you get your tickets a month or so in advance, you can save a lot of money.

Rance is right, it would cost you a fortune to rent a car and drive it back. If you want to see the country, take the ferry to Bellingham and maybe a train from there to FL.

Follow Rance's advice, though I would allow a couple of extra days incase you want to stop and see a few things. Get a Milepost travel guide. This will help you plan your drive back to the states.

You didn't say a time frame so I thought you may enjoy some of our spring time activities. Below are the links for a late Feburary to March Visit.

Default more than 6 or 7 days...

when my kids drove up to Anchorage from North Texas in August, it took 6 days of driving 12-14 hrs. per day. They didn't stop except to eat and get a room for the night.

So. I would plan on it taking longer than 6 or 7 days, just my opinion.

It very well could I drove 16 to 18 hours a day on my last trip. And usually around 800 or more miles a day.
