Like most "young" places, there are lots of folks with an entrepreneurial mindset in Alaska. As far as service industry type stuff is concerned, it is relatively easy to find a niche, or to compete with existing businesses who are only slightly more established than you are. Except for the most touristy areas, standards for service are not particularly high. Problem is, for most businesses, your peak season is only 3 months long. Staying in the black year round is tough. Non-service industry business is tougher. We don't exactly get a lot of businesses relocating here, due to high shipping costs, high cost of living, and being located so far from major markets. Of course, there are resource extraction support businesses, but I don't have a clue what's involved in getting into that game.
