We are moving from Louisiana and also from the worst school district possible. When I received a text message from my husband asking if I would want to move to Alaska I jumped on it. Any where has to be better then here.
After being stuck here I am trying to do my homework first on school districts in the Anchorage area before we move and are again stuck in one that we are unhappy with. I honestly could careless about much else but getting the best possible education for my two special needs children. Any help on this matter would be GREATLY appreciated!

And if you decide to live in the Valley and your husband commute to Anchorage, here's the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District website: Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District / Overview
And here's their page for special needs: Student Support Service / Overview
I drove school bus here in the Valley for several years and a buddy is the Special Needs Routing Specialist for the school district. So I know that they do a good job of getting the kids to school.

Autmom - Hopefully Hogfamily will chime in. He had a negative experience with ASD, but he has a solution that works very well for him. Then again, I have no idea what kind of issues your children have compared to his - your situation may be just fine with an IEP in AK. I have researched options and AK has a lot of educational options.

I have no idea from personal experience good or bad - only forwarding on what I have read on the forum.

It really depends on what type of learning challenges your kids have. If Dyslexia forget the ASD. Several ASD teachers have told us that they are not even supposed to mention the "D word". Even though our youngest tested with Dyslexia with ASDs own test they would not even use the "D word" and denied that he had a problem. We had to have the test results explained to us by an independent special ed teacher.

I don't know if the ASD will accept IEPs from other states.

We fought with the ASD for two years trying to get ANY type of special ed for our oldest boy. They fought it every way they could even when one of their own psychologists wrote in a draft that he needed at least a 504. (This was after ASD testing indicated he had an learning challenge.) In the final recommendation by the special ed dept his recommendation was removed.

All our boys are in a home school co-op that we all love. It is a charter school of the ASD, go figure.

Frontier Charter School > Home

If interested I will PM you with more about our experience.

ASD schools and charter schools can be great for kids without learning challenges.

Our experience is not unusual. We have met many families with similar ASD experience.

I'm pretty sure that ASD accepts IEP's from other states. We move around a lot and I'm pretty sure we came from California with an IEP for my son.

They will probably take the out of state IEP and just write one up just like it.

I believe an out-of-state IEPER is a starting point for an ASD IEP. From what I have seen, with limited exposure, each school is different and some teachers are better than others. Depending upon the severities of your children's disabilities, they may also be eligible for waiver services. Don't forget to check local resources like the ARC and Hope.
