I've lived in Anchorage on more than one occasion. Ran with the good crowd and the bad. Now I'm there every 2 weeks. I stand firm on my previous comment. :-)

Anchorage is great!
I have lived in Anchorage twice! I work in the oil biz and was luck to stay in Anchorage when I was there. The weather is great in the summer. I can't tell you in words how wonderful summers are! Winters can be cold for people like you and I. I am from Houston Texas. I did get use to it really fast though and came to like the snow and cold. However in time you are ready for the summer months!
As far as the light and dark thing...you do get some sun in the winter months but nothing like a "high noon" thing. The sun kinda hangs out on the horizion.
There is NO traffic! I do not care what the locals say. I met a guy in a coffe shop and he was bitching and saying he was going to move because Anchorage has become too busy with traffic. I laughed and said, "You kidding, right?" I really thought he was. He told me he wasn't and he was going to move. Believe me, I am from Houston, I know traffic, there is none in Anchorage. LOL!

Anchorage is pretty sweet. It basically just a BIG alaskan town. Alot of Alaskans say its not Alaska, but they just mean its not the bush. Anchorage though is expensive in terms of real estate, i think its relative in terms of day to day costs with Cali.

My husband and I are probably moving to Anchorage. We are flying up in Janurary for a job interview for myself with the Anchorage PD and State Troopers. I recently graduated with my BA in Criminal Justice, and my husband seperated from the Navy 2 weeks ago. He is a Machinist Mate with a background as a boiler tech. How is the job market for him? I'm not to worried about myself I teach here in Virginia Beach, VA so I also have that to fall back on. Housing to me looked pretty reasonable. Here in Va. Beach a decent starter home in OK area is around $300,000. Also we have family friends in Wasilla. How far is that from Anchorage?? Would we be able to live up there and commute? Houses up there were pretty big, and cheap. We plan on moving up in Febuary. I drive an 05 Nissan Xterra 4x4, and I am getting a block heater put on when the Navy moves us back to Iowa. Would it be safe to drive while pulling a 6'x12' trailer? I have snow tires on it would I need to buy chains or invest in studded tires? Also need to know of a decent hotel near C st, and Tudor?? It doesn't have to be fancy just clean and decent area. Well I guess that is enough of the 20 questions game. I can't wait to get back in the snow. Being from northern Illinois I miss the cold and the Navy has had us in VA and TX for the last 8 years.
Thanks
Cynthia
