Cheaper than Kodiak. 7 years ago, we paid 180-250 for electric, had a Toyo Laser stove for heat, but I never bought more than 50 gallons/month. No propane, that was the most expensive then. We also had a roommate who cut and sold firewood, who kept the airtight stove supplied. We went through a couple cords a month during the winter - but it wasn't seasoned wood, it was mostly spruce that washed up when a freighter lost it's load. The closest thing to seasoned wood was recent deadfalls, and he got 180/full cord, as I recall, more if he stacked it instead of just dropping it off.
Oh, it was a 2,000 sf house, single level.

Well, lest see...Near Fairbanks, 1,700 sq-feet living space, plus a 2-car garage:
Electric = $164.00 per month, winter. Around $90-$114.00 summer
Heating fuel = $4,000 to $5,000 per year in 2008 ($3.00+ per gallon). I just got around 300 gallons, and they should come back to refill th tank by April.
The thermostats are set at 67 degrees in the living and dining rooms, 65 in the bedrooms, and 52 degrees in the garage.

Something I noticed today as the fuel man left his ticket. #2 heating fuel $3.03 a gallon. Regular gas at Fred Meyers $3.09 a gallon no discounts. There used to be a 20 or more cent a gallon difference in price as accounted for road taxes etc. of more than 18 cents. So is the refinery or oil company makeing more profit or what?

That's cheaper than NW WA, which is disgusting. It's closer to 3.50/gal here, depending on which station. I'd rather go back to a horse and buggy, at least you get some fertiziler back instead of toxic exhaust fumes.

I'm looking at moving to Bethel Alaska and was wondering what the cost of utilities were going to be. I am also looking for an apartment or small house to rent... how did you get started?

i'm waiting for a rugged old-timer to chime in with something like "as much wood as you wanna cut."
i'd probably go that route myself if utilities weren't included with my rent. most people here seem to heat with wood.

I have never been to Bethel but I would HOPE there was wood there to burn because I could not even fathom paying for heating oil in the bush communities.
Yikes!!
Here in Anchorage, we pay about $170 for Natural Gas (we are on even pay so the same amount each month) 6 bedroom, 2200sqft. home, 2 story no garage. 6-7 people with gas heat, water, and oven/stove.
Our electric bill is about $150 a month regardless of which month.
