Default Moving to Anchorage, Advice Please!

I am currently set to start moving to Anchorage around February, 2008. I do not have a set date and am fairly flexable. The problem?
I don't know where I am going to live, yet. I have been scoping things out and am planning a trip soon. However, I want to get some info on the better parts of town (not richest, just lower crime and whatnot) before I head out, that way I will be somewhat prepared!
I am looking for an apartment that will allow my two dogs, both under 25 lbs (really under 15, but anyway...). I am also looking to spend under $1,000 a month for rent. And if possible I would love to be near the university as I will be attending in the coming months.
Any advice would be greatly welcomed. Some apartment recommendations would be very much welcome!
Thanks much!

The dogs might be a hassle. Most apartments have a no pet policy. If the university is UAA, look around the area from Northern Lights to Tudor and Lake Otis to Muldoon.

I would avoid living near Muldoon. Spenard, Muldoon, and Mountain View are three communities in Anchorage where crime is the highest. Try to find some place no further east than Boniface, no further north than 15th Avenue or Debarr Road, and no further west than the Seward Highway. Any place south of UAA is fine, it just depends on how far you want to drive or walk to school.

You should be able to find a one-bedroom or efficency appartment for under $1,000/month, but, as mal_fisk indicated, having pets will reduce the number of opportunities by 90% or more. You may be able to find something, but it will take a lot of looking and a bit of luck.

I agree with the last poster. One place you might check out is Independence Park. It's not too expensive and a very nice area. Maybe 10 or 15 minutes from UAA.

Plenty of places to rent but you need to find a new home for the dogs. I've talked to many rental agents and most say no to dogs or cats. Plus, an apartment isn't a place for animals...

Default Advice for Anchorage

I lived in Anchorage for 14 years. I now live in Tucson to attend school. To me, all parts of Anchorage are nice to live in except for Spenard area and maybe Mountain View. I lived in both. They aren't really bad. There is more drug and prostitution in those areas. The area around UAA is pretty. You have a small lake and Providence Hospital is close by. I would suggest living in the Muldoon area around Muldoon Road and Northern lights. I like that area. There is a Carrs on the corner and some other shops. The neighborhood around there is one of my favorites in Anchorage. My Cousin lives in that neighborhood.

I like living in Hillside. Around Huffman Road and Lake Otis. That's up there though. It's about a 15 minute drive to downtown. Not real close to UAA though. Good luck with your move to anchorage and enjoy it. Fur Rondy Takes place in Feb if I am correct. Check that out. Pretty fun.

Default Weidner Agency

Weidner Apartment Homes - Alaska Properties

A number of the Weidner Properties take pets. I know that Campbell Village Apartments used to take pets. If you contact Weidner they may be able to direct you to a place. They used to rent on monthly or quarterly basis with some units.

Don't get rid of your dogs, especially since they weigh less than my cats so must be pretty small! We rented with dogs & cats for years here before we found the perfect place to buy.

Enjoy our Town!

If you look through Weidner Properties, you will see a number of them take pets.

College View Apartments would be a good one for you since it takes small pets & is right by the university.

Default College Alps

Here's a perfect location- an apartment in College Alps, walking distance to university, right up against walking, biking, groomed ski trails & a dog walker's paradise with a lake & dog park.

Just under $1000 in a very safe neighborhood.

Won't last long!
