We kind of don’t want to face the financial struggle of a 30 year fixed.

Thank you. We’re flying out April 12th-16th. We are going to meet real estate agents in both Wasilla and Soldotna. If we can’t buy a home in cash that we like we may have to re evaluate how to invest. Honestly though, our minds are set on Alaska. Also, that’s positive sign that your property has appreciated that much.

Unlike most of the rest of the US, Alaska's economy is in recession. Housing prices have remained remarkably stable despite that, but I don't think anyone's house has appreciated in the past couple of years. I could be wrong, but you might be disappointed in what a $200K house looks like up here.

Have you been to Alaska before? You called Maryland "cold." Alaska is quite a bit different than California or Maryland.

We’ve never been there and I agree with you Maryland isn’t cold in comparison. My wife likes to think so though. And I’m sure I’m not going to be moving into a completely remodeled, turnkey home for under 200. However, I know with absolute certainty 200k is so cal will get me next to nothing in a bad area. My wife and I love the outdoors and we know it’s going to be a culture shock. I’ll take that vs investing all my money in a shoe box and working like a slave for the next 30 years to pay for it.

Btw all feedback is great. Thank you. I need to be as informed as possible before making this move. Honestly though, no other state seems as appealing as Alaska does.

How big of a house are you looking for?

Also, if you don't already have an agent, send me a PM. We just signed some papers with an agent in the Valley. It has been a very simple process with him (we live in the bush currently).

I've seen a lot of married couples move up and then leave several years later because one person really doesn't like it. That person is usually the wife, but not always. I'd suggest visiting in winter since your wife likes to think that Maryland is a good comparison.

I assume you have checked into licensing and reciprocity between CA and AK ... ??

I'm somewhat surprised that you only have $200K with both of you in a very high paying position. I'd think you will have no issues with employment in AK so I would not settle for a cracker box home simply to avoid a modest mortgage.

My 02¢ and well worth the price paid!

You must have gotten Monsterg223 mixed up with the original poster (I guess you would think that LPN work is "very high paying," but -- it isn't.)

We are looking for anything in between 1200 and 2000 with at least .9 of an acre. Yes, I’ve been corresponding with real estate agents in both Wasilla and Soldotna.
