Is it necessary to have a truck in anchorage? Or will a car do? Trying to decide on whether I want a truck or car!!
Advice?

How you drive is way more important that what you drive.
No, a truck is not necessary. The wife drives a 2000 Chevy Caviler without studded tires and does just fine.

I'm not very good in the snow as we are from Denver and there's snow there but I don't think it's as bad as anchorage lol. And we are stationed in japan so haven't driven in snow in the past two years. How bad does it get?

If you want to get around safely without paying an arm and a leg, then I would suggest getting a Subaru Outback.

You can get a pre-owned or even a brand new one in the low to mid $20Ks. They are very reliable, get pretty mpg (especially for an AWD), and once you put a set of winter tires on them, you can go virtually anywhere and be worry-free.

In the interest of full disclosure, I bought a 2013 Outback 2.5i (base model) and have absolutely no complaints. Actually, if I had known how capable Outbacks are, I would have bought one years ago.

I wish you well and welcome to Alaska.

I like trucks because subaru drivers will get you killed. It seems like every time there is bad driver they are in a subaru and got their licence from a cracker jack box.

It's been a looooooooong time ago that I lived in Alaska, but I got through it with a rear-wheel-drive car and a rear-wheel-drive pickup just fine, and made many trips into the mountains hauling a snowmobile or just out driving. I don't think winter driving in Anchorage is any worse than in Denver. 4x4 or AWD would be nice, and it's certainly something I'd want now, but with a little care most could get by just fine with a FWD car. Furthermore, an AWD car, especially a Subie, will handle city streets better than a 4x4 pickup.
