Is it advisable for any reason to buy round-trip tickets when moving up, or would it serve the same purpose to simply buy one-way and ensure that you have sufficient funds set aside for a return trip to the -48, should that become necessary? Do ticket prices fluctuate dramatically from season to season, and year to year?

Also, anyone familiar with buying tickets for the trip up and needing to change travel dates? I'm thinking I'd like to purchase tickets now, but I won't have a solid travel date for another 5-6 weeks, which will put me within 1-3 weeks of actual travel. Is travel insurance through Alaska Airlines an advisable thing? Are they 100% solid with baggage - not screwing it up?

Any other flight travel tips are also appreciated!

Definitely get a round trip ticket. Because you will go through your set aside money much faster than you can believe. This is no place to be without a home once winter weather sets in.

Why would you buy round trip tickets if you are moving up?

I don't think it is even possible to buy an open-ended ticket anymore. One has to have a definite return date if you buy round trip.

I checked the airline website, and didn't see anything about open ended tickets, it sounded like you could change your return date, but that it required a call to the airline and such. So, no big advantage to any of that other than ensuring you don't spend your emergency fund, which isn't something I wouldn't do anyways. And yes, moving, so one-way tickets it will be, and keeping the emergency flight fund intact. Thank you.
