Living in New Jersey is going up and up either groceries prices and living prices. Lock of good pay jobs disappeared somewhere perhaps of high taxes. Because we have socialistic government only stealing money and make them self rich. It's very hard. Just recently governor added 25 cent on gasoline because DOT retired people pension account vaporized. Somehow vaporized !!! This can happen in democratic states . State didn't have money to pay those people . So , now we're punished to pay more money for gasoline.........................wonderful

Based on these posts I don't understand why you've chosen Alaska, let alone Anchorage, as your geographic solution. Maybe look at places in the great plains or southwest.

Anchorage has a major homelessness problem and it's very visible.

Anchorage is a major metropolitan area and has all the regulations that come with that (housing codes, business licensing, parking regulation etc.).

Alaska is one of the highest COLA states in the US. Anchorage summers are fairly humid. Anchorage does have its share of illegal immigrants.

Alaska has some of the most expensive groceries in the nation. Gas prices even in Anchorage are higher than US averages. The state of Alaska is also struggling financially with the burden of retirement plans it agreed to in fatter times.

For anyone moving to Anchorage without a job, the McKinley Tower Apartments might work well as it’s only a few blocks to the public assistance office. Would make it handy when applying for food stamps.

I moved here from Maryland, just outside Baltimore, 15 years ago. I'm originally from Philly, so I have a pretty good idea where you're coming from.

If you think life in NJ is expensive, when you see how much it really costs to survive here, you may view Jersey as a comparable bargain.

Don't even get me started about winter in Alaska, which can easily last a good 6 months.

If you're looking for a change that is not as extreme, then I would suggest checking out my home state of Pennsylvania. At least, any pension or Social Security you receive would be tax-free and if you're close enough to Delaware, you would also have the option of tax-free shopping.

The bottom line is life here will definitely not be cheaper than Jersey and in terms of weather, although the heat and humidity in the summer sucks, it is nothing compared to someplace like Florida but the winter snow and cold will truly kick your ***.

Do your research concerning the cost of living and make a few trips here (especially during the winter solstice when you get about 4 1/2-5 hours of daylight around Anchorage and even less up in Fairbanks.

You really need to experience Alaska at both extremes to really get a feel for this place and if you do decide to pull the trigger, then I will tell you what someone told me when I first arrived.

If you can hang in here for three years, then you will either absolutely love this place or absolutely hate this place and you will have no ambivalence in your feelings and they were right.

After doing your research and your visits, if you decide Alaska isn't for you that's okay because Alaska is definitely not for everyone and there's no shame in realizing and accepting that.
