Yeah, good luck with that. UPS and Fedex are legally allowed to do it, but will not. The bride tried it last summer and no amount of "it's legal" would dissuade them.

Plan for a week. Fly into Anchorage and rent a car. Spend a few days driving south to the Kenai Peninsula. Then a few days north to the Matanuska-Sustina Valley.
Everything will be more expensive than what you are used to. In my opinion, the biggest key to moving to Alaska is how are you going to support yourself and your family. Personally, I don't think "living off the land" is going to cut it. You'll need a job with a cash income. Hunting, fishing, gardening can help the food budget, but you'll still need a paycheck.

If you can pass a background check and a drug test there is usually lots of jobs at the airport. Pay is lousy but usually lots of overtime available. If you don't mind doing the roommate thing and are low maintenance in general you will make enough to survive on until a better job comes along.

When looking for a roommate look for someone that owns the house and is just looking to rent out a room. They usually are month to month without your name being on any of the utilities or anything.
