I have been gone from Anchorage three years now, but did live there for 21 years. I am sure that prices there have risen correspondingly to the lower 48, but I do remember that Carrs was always more expensive. We found Fred Meyer and of course Sams and Costco to be the best options to get lower priced food. Watch for sales and you might be able to get your costs down to maybe not lower 48 rates, but not too far off the mark.

Safeway bought out Carrs about a decade ago. The quality has gone down significantly while the prices have gone up.

I looked on ADN and found that food prices story. All it gives is percentages that items have gone up. Not prices. Carrs I remember had pretty good quality. Sometimes we would go there and other times we shopped at Fred Meyer. I like FM better than Safeway anyhow.

Default Health Food Stores..

By the way, in answer to your question about health food stores, we have Natural Pantry. Also New Sagaya midtown & city market.

However, Freddies & Carrs both have great health food sections & are cheaper than Natural Pantry.
