move to Anchorage (high schools, pros and cons, store)

Hi. I am a single mother with her teen daughter thinking of moving to Anchorage. We also have to dogs. What are the Pros and Cons of moving to Anchorage? Is Anchorage dog friendly? Are the High Schools Good? Any other Advice? We are thinking of taking the ferries up there but are worried because of the dogs and how long they would have to stay alone. Can someone explain that to me? Is it ok to travel the ferries in the winter ( still thinking about the dogs. They are our babies). Is there a Whole foods or Wild oats or any health food store around Anchorage. How about a farmers market?
