Drive from Haines to Tok
Hi! Can anyone give me an idea of what the drive from Haines to Tok is like? I'm mostly worried about gas stations along the way. I'll be driving during the day, and a friend is driving their car along with me, so I'm not worried about being alone. I drive a little pickup and it doesn't get the best gas mileage. Should I be worried about running out of gas or are there enough places to stop along the way? I'll be driving it two weeks from now. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Plenty of gas stations. Just fillup when you see one and you'll be fine.

Thanks! How about customs? Is it a pain in the neck?

Customs is fine as long as you have your paperwork in order. Also, a previous conviction for a DUI or DWI can/will keep you out of Canada. If you have a passport that will speed up the process.

Thanks for the reply! Call me ignorant, but what kind of paperwork are you talking about? I have a passport, and also a Canadian car-insurance card. Do I need to have receipts for some of the more expensive stuff I'm bringing or something? I'm kind of in the dark about this....

Just a passport should be all you need, and maybe your trucks registration.

Passport, maybe birth certificate, PROOF of INSURANCE card, vehicle registration. Call your insurance company, tell them your driving through Canada, them them you need the Canadian insurance card.
It's a minor sticking point. I've only been asked for mine a couple of times. But I've also heard from some people that they were turned back at the border for not having it. I think it all depends on your attiutde. But better safe than sorry.

when we took the trip in march 2001 (did you take a ferry into haines, btw?), there were gas stations and we didnt have any problems getting through canada. my husband took a different route to leave ak just this february, so he told me what you need:
you need a passport to get through, as well as your drivers license. i cant stress enough the passport; you will get turned away if you dont have one. its a good idea to have your paperwork current on your vehicle, as they can ask you for that as well.
if you are bringing animals, they need to have paperwork in the last 30 days stating they are healthy to travel/ statement of health. ask your vet and tell them you are traveling into canada; they will give your pet the necessary shots and papers.
they will also ask you weird things like are you transporting fruit (you actually arent allowed to bring food into and out of alaska, but everyone does anyway or if you have any weapons (if you do, you better have papers on that too).
they will ask you where you are coming from, where you are going, why, etc. and they might well search your car. they searched us quickly in 2001 when it was us and our 1 yr old, but didnt search my hubby, his dad and our animals in feb (probably cuze it was 50 below lol)
as for gas, filler up/top it off when you hit one as to not run out before the next one surfaces(that goes for the whole trip on the alcan (alaska/canada highway 1), but i dont know how far you are going past tok). i remember there is a place to stay right around tok, and it only had a few rooms, but im sure a search on the internet will help you find out better. its about 450 miles from haines to tok.
hope this helps you. have a great trip and dont forget to take pictures of the millions of bald eagles you'll see in haines!!

Passports aren't required until 2009. For 2008, all you need is a driver's license and birth certificate if you're driving across the border. Going by ship or plane does require a passport and I believe is a U.S. Customs/Homeland Security requirement.

There are gas stations at Haines Junction, Destruction Bay, and Beaver Creek. Kluane Wilderness Village was closed last August, no more gas there.
You can keep an eye on conditions before you travel at:
Alaska Road Traveler Information Service This has conditions/construction reports for the Alaska Highway in the Yukon also.
Current Road Conditions - Highways and Public Works - Government of Yukon
