Does anyone have any recommendations on moving companies? We're moving to Anchorage in about a month, from Chicago. Ace Delivery and Moving (who are in Anchorage and so would probably be easy to do business with) sound like an affordable choice, but we don't know much about the quality of their service. Your insights would be much appreciated.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but shouldn't you be looking at national moving companies in Chicago? Would that not be cheaper?

Best of luck on your move! What brings you to Anchorage?

I used Continental Van Lines to move from Oklahoma to Anchorage. The saleswoman from Anchorage was really professional in the beginning until I signed the contract. Then she gave me over to this ditzy girl that kept losing my paperwork and kept calling me. Then my stuff was delayed and it took an extra week than they promised. But, it was December so I guess I can't complain too much about the wait. Also, they didn't break anything, just some minor scratches. They are an affiliate of United Van Lines. I wouldn't recommend them.

we used carlyle van lines. they used excessive amounts of wrapping paper and some of our stuff got broken (but i dont know if it was from them or the moving company that moved our stuff from the port in california to our home). i think they tried to get as much weight as possible so they could get the most money they could out of us and the military. use your discretion....

My suggestion is to use a national firm. Do not use an independent!!! I've heard stories where an independent, once having loading goods in their van, holding it ransom until another $5-10,000 was paid. Also, just because a company advertises in the phonebook as a national firm and uses their estimate forms, don't assume they are a national firm. Ask them and even call the corporate office. 20 years ago, we used a "national firm" only to find out later they wern't later. The person make a "mistake" on the estimate that would have cost us $1,500-2,000 more. Fortunately, we already had our property when they asked for the extra money.

Default Moving companies

I live in Anchorage and am moving to Santa Fe in a few months. I have a reasonable quote $1.15# from the Packaging Store 907.563.9876 but was also wondering if they are reputable or if anyone has worked with them. They use Yellow Transportation for Santa Fe but not sure if that would be true for Chicago. I like them because they only require a 500# minimum but if you have an entire household that might not be important. Good luck.

My mother in law used Packaging store to move from Anchorage to Wyoming a few years ago and had no problems. For a more economical move I would recommend a company that palletizes and ships your goods rather than trucks it.

Thanks for your reply. We did! It's just such a long move that it's not profitable for them.

Thanks for the shout-out, too. I got a teaching job at UAA and that's why we're moving.
