Cell Phone Coverage in Alaska
I am a traveling nurse coming to Alaska to work. Does Verizon work up there, Anchorage or outlying areas? If not who does? Thanks for any input.

I don't know about Verizon. I use ACS which has state wide coverage other than in the deep mountain valleys south of Anchorage.

Cellular one (AT&T) works, but is limited to the areas around the cities and along most of the highways, but I use ACS

I have Tmobile and it went off the ACS towers. I was only there 2 weeks if you are there for a long period of time the company might not like that. I have heard that if you have cingular they will cut your service. I guess maybe it was getting to expensive. I guess it could matter if you want to change the # to.

Verizon works great up here. They also don't do any of those tricks that other companies do by traveling out of their area. You won't get alot of your fancy features, and remember to dial the full area code when calling folks back where you're from. I'm using Verizon, but also have ACS for work...

Thank you for the encouraging word on Verizon, I really did not want to give it up! I hated the thought of leaving them and breaking my current contract.
Thanks

cell phone contract
I had Cingular here and it worked great until they cancelled my contract because I was out of their usual area. We had gotten the phones in Seattle. My husband has a place there where he occasionally stays because of his work. I am pretty much always around Anchorage. Cingular service here was perfect, but after a few months they said they had to end my contract. I didn't have to pay any penalties, but I sure miss their service! Hopefully you won't run into this problem with Verizon.

Thanks I hope not too! I have never stayed in my home area and have not had a problem yet! Will keep my fingers crossed.

Another similar question. My daughter recently moved to Anchorage. I want to buy her a pay-as-you-go cell phone. walmart.com seems to indicate that there aren't any that work in Anchorage. Does anyone know if this is true? If not, what service DOES work there? I thought the TracPhone would work anywhere. Help??
