Aircraft noise
Hi,
I'm wondering how loud the aircraft are around the UAA campus. Now I know that at PANC, they land from the west and take off towards the north generally (or always?). Also, how much traffic and noise do the other airstrips generate? Thanks.

UAA is near Merrill Field. Only small planes fly in and out of there. There are trees around UAA and it pretty much is cancelled out. The flight path for that runway is down a little ways so you won't really hear them taking off or landing. On the other hand, depending on wind, you will hear the large jets taking off from PANC now and then. I never hear them anyways when I'm here in Anchorage, which I am now.

ok that sounds good then...especially compared to where I am right now. I'm working in southern california right now for the summer and the planes landing here are so loud you can't hear the TV or someone talking to you sometimes.

Yes, probably 80% of the time, down-wind approach to ANC (arriving from the south) is out over the inlet then right turn and landing to the east on Runway 7L (or left turn to final for traffic arriving from the north). Typical departure is to the north on Rwy 32. Occasionally, like yesterday, departures are to the east on Rwy 7L with climb out over the city, but noise abatement procedures are used on this pattern. Also, on ocassion approaches are made over the city to Rwy 25R. Noise at UAA is generally not a problem in any of these patterns.
As mentioned, UAA is closer to, and more directly affected by general aviation traffic at Merrill Field (MRI). The main factor is that area of midtown lies under the approach of traffic landing north on Rwy 34 so again noise is fairly low. Of course, if traffic were to depart and climb out to the south, that would be a big problem for that area. However, I don't know that I've ever seen departures to the south off Rwy 16.

It is pretty quiet here at UAA. The major noise comes from the helicopters landing at the hospital. Lately they have been routing departures over the campus. Just the other day it was 747 after 747 flying right overhead.

thanks for the replies...
is the rerouting due to a certain wind pattern/direction?

The same thing today. It's amazing those 747's can fly at all.

you'll only hear ANC traffic when they are departing east and even then at UAA you'll only be hearing the heavies as the departure procedure has aircraft turn after reaching 2000ft and the heavies take longer. I mostly heard aircraft in the morning. Then you get the occasional Merrill traffic but they aren't loud.
