What happens when the cruise ship breaks loose from the mooring lines in the winter? I can just see one of them washed ashore over on Pennock. Maybe refloat it at high tide?

OK, now I have to answer this one. Bob, SE Alaska isn't depressed. If you want depressed, go to SW Alaska. Bethel, Dillingham Pribilofs, St. Lawrence Island, Kotzebue. Those areas are depressed. Add in the fact that the demand for the cruise vessels is diminished by an order of magnitude. You might get one cruise a year into SE Alaska, but the cold temps and wet climate limit the customer base. The lowered clouds limit mountain and glacier viewing. The stores in SE are not going to remain open for a possibiity of 5,000 or so tourists who may or may not stop in to see their shops. When you have 30,000 a day in Juneau and 15-20 thousand in Sitka and Haines, you can afford to have shops open 7 days a week. People don't usually come here in winter to see winter, per se. They want to see Hawaii and San Diego, Brownsville or the Caribbean. They have enough winter at home. Above the Arctic Circle, there are primarily Japanese tourists there to see the Northern Lights, but the average American won't sacrifice his hard earned 2 weeks to possibly get a glimpse of the aurora. Economics drives employment in the tourist industry. Alaska and the National Parks Service close down Denali in winter because of lowered demand. Wishing it otherwise will not make it so.

Not to be a naysayer, but Bob, reality is hard to argue with in this case. Hell, fishing is a summer thing too here. If your not subsistance, you have to be pretty hard-core to be ice chopping and sitting on an icy lake to get a possible nibble.
