UAA vs UAS: The only one I went to was UAA (Anchorage). It was ok, but not really much campus life. Kind of like: you drive from your apartment in town, attend your class, then return to your home kind of thing. Not saying this is bad, it's just how it was. But when I went was WaaaAAAY back in the 70's, so all that may have changed. Anchorage is a big city (probably 350,000+), with all the big city pro's and con's.
UAS (Univ of Alaska Southeast) has locations in Ketchikan, Sitka, and Juneau. Sitka is a pretty town that used to be the state capitol, a title now passed on to Juneau. (
http://www.uas.alaska.edu/sitka/) Ketchikan is like the "rain capitol" of Alaska...if you like lots of rain (and I mean LOTS), go there. Also quite a bit in Sitka and Juneau, being in south-eastern Ak. Juneau is a fair-sized town (30,000 comes to mind...I might be wrong though). I am not familiar with Juneau, so will pass on commenting. All three of these locations DO NOT have road access to the rest of the state or the Cont-USA, so you are kind of confined to the immediate area. They are boat or air access only. Hopefully, someone in one of these areas will pitch in with a little more input. All three have gorgeous mountain scenic views, weather permitting.
If I had to do it all over again? I'd probably still choose UAA...I don't much like Anchorage, but on weekends I could jump in my car and escape for a few days to the outlying areas/towns north and south. (but, being a guy, I like the woodsy outdoor uncrowded lifestyle; that may not be important in your case...you might like Anchorage) (my wife loves it)
My two cents...
