Yeah, u are right about that...on my small island, if you go onto a crime site (family watchdog.com or something)...you can see we have about 20 child molestors here. Alaska is a place where some rules just don't seem to apply for some people...lots of people here just don't understand or follow what others consider common boundaries of humanity. But we just live with that and love AK for the things that it is...and so many people here are so wonderful. They are generous and kind to newcomers and the word "neighbor" still means that they help eachother through tough times or emergencies.

Mal-flisk and rainy, excuse the late response I have not been on the forum for a few days. Thanks for the reply and I did take the url tags out the first time, but will give it another try.

its all about demographics
Rainey is right, if you check the numbers you'll find that Anchorage has a big problem primarily with one pretty specific category of rape: assaults on drunk native women (primarily by drunk native men). In fact, that largely describes the situation across the state when it comes to sexual assaults. A disproportinate amount of these assaults are in the urban homeless population. While the situation is slowly getting better its not unusual to see individuals and even groups of homeless passed out drunk in public areas during the summer months. Not a winter goes by without someone wandering off drunk, passing out, and freezing to death. This is not a problem thats restricted to either the big city or the native population; I remember reading about a 20-something guy disappearing till the spring thaw not too many years back right in town at a popular strip club.
Not trying to minimize the severity of the problem or the facts as they are, but if you don't make passing out drunk in public a regular part of your lifestyle your chances of being sexually assaulted go WAY, WAY down.

But this thread is not about guns. Regardind rape in Anchorage and Alaska, my wife told me just recently that Alaska has a high number of rapes because there are many single men isolated in small communities and comparatively few women.
This might be an important factor in the whole situation, added to that supposed alcohol problem of Alaska Natives somebody mentioned here.

stereotype
I'd like to add....you just said Alaska Natives have an alcohol problem. You didn't say, "some Alaska Natives" OR "some people in the Alaska Native community". I don't like to rock-the-boat, but this topic gets me steamed. I'm not necessarily replying to you personally. I have heard this before. I grew up in Alaska as an Alaska Native almost always aware of the stereotype. As a teen, I was aware that when some people saw me, they probably saw "the stereotype". I definately had a chip on my shoulder. Not to say that alcohol abuse is ok....but, please consider that many of these people are being plunged into a new culture that they may not have necessarily chosen...where theirs isn't shown the same respect often times; this can create a lack of self-respect and lead to alcohol abuse. I have heard many of the stereotypes - very hurtful and disrespectful.
I would just like the outside world to know that not all Alaska Natives are burdened by alcoholism. It's unfair to say that Alaska Natives (as a whole) have an alcohol problem...it's simply not true. SOME Alaska Natives have an alcohol problem as do others of different nationalities, cultures, societies. This stereotype is just hurtful. I am a daughter, mother, aunt, niece. I have aunts and uncles and cousins who are Alaska Native. When you say that Alaska Natives have an alcohol problem, you are refering to me and people that I love.
