Anchorage is a great transition into Alaska - I always felt it was alike a little tiny LA. It is the hub for a lot of Bush activity - people come in to spend their money...sometimes spend too much of it on booze, sometimes spend it all and get stuck in an ugly lifestyle. But there are plenty of upscale and safe places to live your daily life - you'll get a sense of the place and be able to resist putting yourself in unsafe situations. Its a great adventure - go for it.

I want to point out that stereotypes are built upon by a majority. Just as other cities the mass alcohol consumption is....i guess created by other races however in Alaska the majority, not Alaska Natives as a whole, but when people think of alcohol consumption we think of Alaska Natives simply because we are displayed to it everyday by people in the streets. It is a public practice and because it is an open act that is why many people feel its Alaskan Natives as a whole. A lot of people are narrow minded and can't realize that a problem is beyond what their eyes can see. I agree with you that Alaskan Natives are put into that stereotype and its awful to have to see it day to day.

I moved to Anchorage also a little hesitant with the statistics but have not seen any problems within the city. The main rule here, as is anywhere, is play it safe. Lock your doors, don't walk down deserted streets alone, and know that if you are biking/hiking alone you are in good enough shape to outrun/bike anyone threatening you.
I hiked the Appalachian Trail alone and people were constently asking whether I was worried about getting attacked by a human (I was personally more worried about bears). My answer was "Always aware, never frightened away." The one time some man did notice me and say to his friend "Hey, it's a girl hiker!" and give some chase, he didn't make it half way up the mountain before realizing he wasn't going to catch me.

What is sad is that my kids tell me that I am the only parent out of all their friend's parents that doesn't drink frequently to excess and/or use drugs. We may see people on the street that conform to a stereotype but behind closed doors there is a lot of alcohol consumption.

Several points are clear from the study. If you avoid certain areas and don't associate with people in those areas you are safer. When you are out use common sense. travel with a friend, and or dog. Take a training course and carry a weapon. Amazing what a firearm can prevent. Have fun but be safe.

As the thugin gets worse you may want to consider a back up weapon in your vehical as well as a small concealed carry on your person, they had the ruger lcp on sale for black friday and thoes are nice summer carry weapons as well (I will warn you now finding .380 ammo is going to be a major source of frusttration, once you find ammo this will not be a plinking weapon I think I fired like 6 rounds through my gun because the ammo is like finding the lost arc of the covenant, I think ammo stores have wised up and put a limit on how many you can buy because people were getting pretty pissed and stopped there shooting hobbies myself included). I have been thinking about getting a styer aug for the back of the truck if extra fire power is needed I like my PTR91 but its to hard to get in and out of a vehical and swing it around if I could get it out and manage it quickly enough I could lay waste to pretty much anything in front of me, chances are you wont need it but if the time ever came to lay the smack down you could lay the smack down indeed. I did get to have fun with that PTR91 when I was showing it to a buddy out of the back of my truck and put the mag in and cycled a round in when there were some thugs walking by, lets just say they walked a little faster, lol. I never go anywhere outside of work without a firearm.
The biggest thing that will save you is situational awareness, training and a weapon

All i can say is drinking drinking drinking there is to many people that drink.. And most of the crimes are alcohol related. It is nasty and i cant wait to move out of this city. I don't feel threatened by it but i have two little girls and would prefer not to live in a city with such a high sex offender rate. Dont wanna be racist but it is the natives they have the highest rate they are the ones that are always abusing there sisters daughters ect it is descusting

You're not being racist, the statistics back you up on that.
