Concerned about safety? You shouldn't have any trouble. If your staying in Anch perhaps avoid Mountain View area.

We lived in Spenard, after being warned online that Spenard was bad. When I return to Anchorage, it's the first place we will look - everything is 'right there' - a five to ten minute drive from literally everything. We didn't see any crime - there tend to be a few druggies or drunks staggering along Spenard on any given night, but I never had the feeling we were in danger at the convenience store - nothing like that. I've lived in Houston a few times and we were always looking around, always aware of our suroundings, always on guard - even in a nice area on the edge of Katy. It's not like that at all in Anchorage. We payed $1750 a month for a large, nice, 3 bedroom duplex. It had an office, which we used as a fourth bedroom. We also looked at some more run down places in the neighborhood that went for around $1200.

You're not listening
I think you should re-read the excellent advice you were given in a previous post. You don't seem to be as prepared for your move as you claimed.

Yeah, I saw this thread and chuckled and wasn't even going to respond. I don't want to sound harsh, but everyone here has already given you advice on where to look. My suspicion is that you had no idea how much housing (especially short term housing) was going to cost when you made plans and sold your house. Now you're convinced you can do it (and if it was Houston you'd probably have no problem finding super cheap rental space short term) but this is Anchorage and there really isn't a huge competition and glut of empty rentals like there are in some south-west markets. Asking the same question in a new thread isn't going to get you any new answers, the tough reality is that in order to find a short term rental for your size of family to even fit in is going to cost a minimum of $800-$1000 a month and that's for a run down apartment in a run down neighborhood.

Unfortunately, the hostel prices are going to be per person, so at 9 people...

Yeah, hostels I think are out of the question for a family that big.

Can someone explain how 'bad' the Spenard area is? I hear a lot of bad things, and a lot of good things too?
