Anchorage Property Tax
Just saw an article this morning in the Anchorage Daily News about the high property taxes there. ( Property taxes will go up under new budget: Anchorage | adn.com)
I was totally astounded to learn the tax mill rate is currently 14.93....
Looks to me like the only way to fix this is to implement a modest sales tax...to let tourists and visitors help pay the tax burden...not just property owners. It's my belief that everyone should help shoulder the burden, not just one segment of the population. Oh wait...I like to shop in Anchorage because of no sales tax (and it's 7% where I live)...please disregard the previous two sentences...
Where I live in Alaska the mill rate is 8.69. (and I thought that was much too high)

Ours are over 9%, and went up this year due to 'improvements'...But none that we have made since buying this house over a year ago. What really gets me is on top of registering/licensing the boat and trailer, we have to pay $50 per year to park on private property (out of town). Maybe I should hide the bikes...

I wish my Mill Rate was only 14.93. One of the reasons I moved to the Valley was because the property taxes were lower in the Mat-Su Borough than they were in Anchorage. That is not true any longer. Every year I have lived in the Valley the Mill Rate has increased. The Mill Rate was 15.01 last year. It has not been announced this year yet, but I'm certain it will increase.

Don't get me started on property taxes!
Fortunately, we were able to pass the tax-cap initiative in last month's election, and if Sullivan is elected mayor tommorow in the runoff, we may finally begin to see some sanity return to the budgetary process in Anchorage. Of course if "the worm" - Eric Croft - Mark Begich lite wins, we will simply continue on as before.
But you are right, we are going to have to implement some kind of sales tax here in Anchorage. Us property owners simply cannot afford to continue footing the entire tax burden.
Wow, never thought I would see the day I was actually FOR another tax! But there is simply no choice, and as you point out, we can start getting the visitors to pay for some of the services they use along with the rest of us.

How do you find out the mill rate for the different tax districts?

When I left Anchorage last year, my mill rate was 14.3. I thought that was high until I moved to NC. The mill rate here is the same, but my taxes are HIGHER than in Anchorage. Why? Because they base the mill on $100 of assessed value. I was complaining about having a $3k a year property tax bill and now I'm going to have almost $7k a year in property tax bills! Oh, and lets not forget personal property tax (taxes on OWNING a vehicle, also called "highway use tax") and sales tax (6.75% on non-food and 2% on food). Trust me, once you let the government start taxing you, they will never stop. If they get sales tax, then they will push for personal property tax, then state income tax (which I now have to pay in addition to all the other taxes). I don't regret my move, but I didn't realize how good I had it until I went somewhere else!
