Default Relocation to Anchorage-?? about the dog

I've been reading through the posts here for several days, and have learned a LOT of good info. My son is being transferred to Anchorage for his job within the month. His fiancee will come up in August after they are married, in fact I think they're considering going straight to Anchorage after their honeymoon.

My question is about getting their little dog up to Alaska. She's a small 2 yr. old dog, maybe 10 lbs. What's the best way to move your pets?

Should they come to Texas after the honeymoon, then fly to Anchorage with the dog? Or is it common to ship the pet as air cargo? (I'm afraid the dog will die of fright if they do that, and the temperature is a factor in August)

They won't have a car to drive up - his will be shipped and she's selling hers here. She'll replace her car in Alaska.

They are so excited about the opportunity to live somewhere that not a lot of people can claim to have been. We can't wait to go visit them!

thanks for any advice about the dog...

If they plan to fly to ANC with the pet the best thing to do is check with the airline they choose to fly for their pet policy.

If she's under a certain weight I think she can be taken in a carry on container into the passenger compartment of the plane with her people. She'll also have to have proof of a recent vet exam and a rabies certificate. There was a little dachsund on the plane the last time I flew from Anchorage to Ketchikan.

Default thx Rainy

Oh Rainy, what good news. I was hoping for something like that. So we will check with the airline and see about their size limits.

They adore this dog, in fact he has her at his place now and he visited 4 kennels before he found an "acceptable" one. he was only leaving her overnight!

Here's a link to Alaska Airline's pet info--looks like she can go; that's good. I totally understand about the kennel. I had to find a kennel for mine where he would be cared for by female employees only because he's unpredictable around men, and his vet has to be a woman.

This might sound a little nutty...but you can also send your pets to Alaska via FedEx! I know the Alaska Zoo uses them for animals' travels.
According to my husband (who works for FedEx) the only international FedEx hub in the U.S. is the one up here, so they can pretty much ship everything here. =)
