Default yard sale

Keep an eye out in the spring for the Kempton Hills all-neighborhood granddaddy of all yard sales. The entire community participates & you can get the most amazing deals, especially kids stuff, but actually everything. It's historically around mother's day; a number of years it's been the Saturday before mother's day.

Actually, ASD goes out to recess to around -10F, so snow pants for school certainly helps during our cold spells especially with the wind chill factor.

I have found that whatever I bought the kids usually sits in the closet and they wander around in the lightest jacket they can get away with.

A suggestion though. Get some ice cleats for your own shoes. I wear them between the car and the office because the parking lot is icy, and I hate looking like a fool when I go splat! in front of the windows. Also, there is a maneuver known as the Alaska waddle. It's walking spay-footed, slowly, and cautiously. You will know it when you see it. LOL

mal_flisk - I guess I didn't realize that ice cleats existed! After working in the emergency department for many years, I not only know about looking like a fool when you fall down, but also all the broken bones I took care of from people falling on the ice. I am not sure what the spay footed walking is, but I am sure I will learn when I get moved up there next month.

They sell them in various places around town here. Fred Meyers usually has a couple of different kinds, but if you're a female, don't wear heels and expect them to fit (little joke there).

mal_flisk - Understood!! You wouldn't see me wearing heels anyway in that kind of weather! Especially knowing I have to be on my feet most of the day! But those ice cleats sound interesting! The last time I wore cleats was when I played baseball and softball in my younger years!

HI Shan!
From our experience (no kids with us though) I spent heavy on some Northface boots for me for snowshoeing, etc........and a pair of Uggs for everyday use. I also got a few wool blend socks and put the old cotton ones away. Never had cold feet, either of those boots kept me good for the whole of winter.
I also mostly relied on layering.......

Last year we had -40 for only 2 weeks here in the Anchorage area, the rest of it was usual winter weather, best I can recall anywhere from -10 to 20 above.

I ditto the garage sales and thrift stores........I snagged a nearly new Columbia parka the other day .

Yeah we did! When I left work from night shift I would watch the thermometer in the truck go lower and lower ........and lower across the Hay Flats. Mostly -38..........or that's where the thermometer's range stopped
