Broken windshields in Anchorage area
Recently while driving around Anchorage I've noticed a number of vehicles with long cracks across the windshield from one side to the other. Can anyone give me an explanation for this? I've lived in the mountains between North Carolina and Tennessee and crack there are small and circular not at all like I'm seeing here. Also I saw a business advertising 'crack resistant windshields' which seems to have something to do with this phenomena.

Most of the cracks probably started out as small circular cracks. In the winter we get a lot of hard frost on the windshields. Thus people will let their cars warm up with the defroster on. The inside of the windshield warms up a lot faster than the outside of the windshield. This puts a lot of stress on the windshield. That stress causes small cracks to become large cracks. I once had a crack travel all the way across my windshield in the matter of a couple minutes

One of the biggest reasons is because gravel is used on the roads and highways here in the winter. Especially if you travel the Glenn Hwy., Seward Hwy., or the Parks, gravel is always being kicked up. For those in the Valley traveling to Anchorage it is unfortunately a common occurence. I know, we've had it on a couple of cars.

Yep, I have already replaced one windshield and had a ding fixed on the new windshield on my Toyota Corolla which I just bought this past August.

Gee wizz what did I start? Sounds like someone is making home brew and drank it all at once. The crack I was asking about isn't sold by the spoonfull.
