Hello folks!

Long story found here on the Alaska forum:

http://www.city-data.com/forum/alask...ving-19-a.html

Short story:

Trying to find a place to work near Anchorage. Would only be supporting myself and would have a roommate. Willing to do anything, but would prefer to stay away from touristy jobs if at all possible, as I want something more permanent rather than thru the summer.

Does anyone know if this area has anything that would even considering hiring for bottom-rung jobs for people out of state?

I'm very determined to get to Alaska, and any information would be highly appreciated!

It's unlikely your going to find a job posting on this forum. Your either going to have be here in person, take a summer job thru a tourist company, or posses a in-demand skill, like a doctor or nurse. Without being here it's unlikely you'll get an committment on an entry level job. It's just no realistic.

Your best bet would be to start out with the seasonal touristy route. That gets you here and gives you an opportunity to make contacts and apply for permanent jobs in person. It might take a couple of years before you can get a foot in the door though.

I drove school bus for quite a few years in the Valley and we were always looking for drivers. They do all the training and the pay is double minimum wage.

Thank you for the replies! I am not expecting people to line up offering me jobs through the forums (not that I wouldn't love it...), but just to see what types of jobs are around. I'm looking for knowledge and the existence of different types of jobs -- just trying to prepare for the hunt.

Southern Indiana isn't exactly like Alaska, so I am trying to absorb all the possibilities and knowledge that I can and learning what different job markets in AK actually are.

AKStafford is correct in that they are always looking for school bus drivers here in Anchorage area too. Some of the bus drivers get jobs in the summer driving tour bus.
