Hello, I've been reading alot of these topics lately and i'm pretty new to this forum. So hopefully my question hasn't been asked a billion times haha.

I'm currently going to school at ISU in Eastern Idaho, and I've found out that after being enrolled here, the college atmosphere, environment and location isn't exactly what I was hoping the normal "College Experience" to feel like. So i was looking around to see any schools to transfer too, and of course UAA caught my attention. I've been to Alaska a couple times on vacations and absolutely fell in love with the place, it seems like this is my ordeal place to live. I was just wondering how the University is (Student life/Fun, academics, location and weather) The winters here are pretty brutal, getting below -20 numerous times and the occasional snowfall so weather isn't a problem for me. Hopefully any locals or students currently enrolled at the university can tell me their opinion and their experience.
Thanks!

Overall I really like the school. But like every school, it has its problems. I feel that the academics are great, and I really enjoy the campus. It is kind of spread out though, but the shuttles are awesome once you figure out the schedule. The weather is pretty mild compared to other parts of Alaska. It doesnt get below 0 very often, we do get a bit of snow but not a ton.

I dont what you want in terms of the typical "college experience" but UAA really isnt much of a party school. However there are lots of outdoor activities that the school sponsors.

Hope that helps.

That's a good thing to hear, you don't want to spend all this money for a college education and get nothing out of it. I was looking at the map and is the reason why it's so spread out, is because the dorms/dinning on one side of campus and then the classes are on another?

Sorry i wasn't very brief with the whole "college experience" kind of thing, I'm not too crazy about parties, maybe just to hang out and that's about it.
The outdoor activities is what interests me, like camping, hiking, kayaking, etc, and i'm sure there's tons of that in Alaska.

Well, for outdoor activities UAA is adjacent to some of the best ski/bike/hiking trails in the city, University Lake area & APU trail system. Actually, from there you can traverse the entire city as the university system links with Chester Creek which goes down to connect with the coastal trail to Kincaid and Bicentennial Park trails which go up to Hillside.

Just outside of Anchorage in Chugach State Park is world-class hiking and camping. The University has outdoor education classes to get you out there with a group. They also have kayaking classes.

You need to speak with current students to get a good idea.

There are 17 reviews...67% would NOT return, while 33% would return. Keep in mind, people who are upset with their school are more likely to cast their vote, but still this score is bad. It's one of your best choices in Alaska though.

Yeah, they get all the money!

UAF seems to be more of a college, and UAA seems to be more of a vocational school.

Really... everyone knows it. UAA is basically a community college. UAF is much more like a real university.
