Is Ann Arbor part of Detroit? (Flint, Canton: construction, income, living)

The only people who think ann arbor is part of detroit are people from ann arbor. Its a class issue because of ann arbor's affluence.

Really? My perception has been just the opposite. The Metro Detroiters consider A2 to be part of Detroit but the A2ers definitely (read: look down noses) do not consider themselves part of Metro Detroit.

It depends who you ask. The US Census Bureau has A2 being its own individual Metro Area (Washtenaw Co.), but part of the greater Detroit-Ann Arbor Consolidated Area. A2 people do not consider themselves as part of the Detroit MSA, but Detroiters do.

I think part of it is that we think nothing of going to Ann Arbor for shopping, sports and entertainment, but Ann Arborites rarely venture outside of the freeway belt surrounding A2, and almost never go out to the city.

Ypsi is NOT a sister city to Ann Arbor, it just happens to be next to Ypsi and since Ypsi on BOTH Wastenaw and Wayne counties. then Ypsi should stand alone as a metro detroit suburb. screw ann arbor, Ypsi use to have a 313 area code before ann arbor came in and ousted all of Ypsi's busnesses and media out the city and those crazy conservatives took it all for themselves and claimed it their own.

point being, unless you have lived in Ypsi/Belleville/Canton/Romuls/Inkster area you dont really know what you're talking about.

Pretty much everyone I know who lives in AA distances themselves from Ypsi. AA and Ypsi are worlds apart in many ways.

LOL about the "crazy conservatives" comment. AA is arguably the most liberal city in SE Michigan, the difference being that the liberals in AA are more intellectual than in places like Ypsi where people are more likely to vote Dem because they belong to the UAW and the union brass told them to than because they truly possess liberal ideologies.

If you want to find the "crazy conservatives", you will find that many of us live in the smaller towns surrounding AA, but AA is by and large very liberal. Whenever we go there we have a standing bet to see who spots the first Obama bumper sticker. One time it took almost ten minutes, lol.

Warren is 134,000 people.

Sterling Heights 127,000

Livonia and Dearborn are each at about 100,000

Troy is 80,000


Where is the cut off? I always though of all of these places as suburbs

Ann Arbor is listed at 114,000. Ann Arbor is smaller than many of the places that most people would agree are unquestionably suburbs.


If Ann Arbor is not a suburb it is not due to size or distance, but because it has its own unique city culture a separate downtown and a completely separate identity. Ann Arbor is clearly part of the Detroit Metro area, but I do not think that it is a suburb. I am not sure that any town with its own downtown qualifies as a "suburb" Places like Northville, South Lyon, Milford, Royal Oak, Birmingham, etc. I consider towns, not suburbs. Places like Troy, Novi, West Bloomfield, melvindale, inkster, romulus, canton. I consider suburbs. Some places I am not really certain. Ecorse, Allen Park, and similar cities have a sort of downtown, but they have more of a feeling of a suburb than of a separate town. I guess i am not sure what really makes a suburb.

I've lived in both areas and I would have to say AA is it's own city.
It's a college town, obviously does not have the larger attractions such as casinos and cobo, major sports etc.
Taylor and AA do not compare. I think all of the downriver cities are tied into Detroit. Where I do not see AA tying into Detroit at all. HTH.
