Default is Ann Arbor as bad (rough) as detroit

Would greatly appreciate feedback. I have a sense Detroit is where all the nastiness is....AA seems like a utopic center, intellectual beauty.

In terms of the cost of housing, it is much worse.

In just about every other regard, it is nowhere near as rough. Ann Arbor is quite safe (like anywhere in the USA, just don't be foolish).

There are some things I like about Ann Arbor and some things I don't. I'm not sure I would want to live there. It seems safe enough though.

Utopic center? Uh...well, not quite, but it is a nice, largely upscale, intellectual college town that is quite safe in comparison to Detroit or any other large city, or probably most college towns.

What people can't seem to wrap their minds around is that Michigan, not even the bulk of southeastern Michigan, does NOT equal Detroit, just as the bulk of northeastern Illinois does NOT equal the south side of Chicago, the bulk of northwestern Georgia does NOT equal the dangerous sections of Atlanta, and etc., etc.

Ann Arbor is a destination town. People flock here from all over the country, and even many parts of the world outside of the U.S. The University of Michigan is one of the highest ranked public universities in the country and something like #16 in the world. Ghetto it's not. Expensive, it kinda is, but it's still inexpensive in comparison to cities like Boston or Chicago. It has been consistently rated the #1 college town in the country by magazines like Forbes and Money, so it must have something special. Come on over and check it out and see for yourself. : )

Ann Arbor lacks any identifiable "rough" spots.

Housing costs are also way too high for any rough spots to pop up!

There really aren't any rough places in Ann Arbor that would compare to those of major cities, such as Detroit. Still, however, it is a decent-sized city and crime still (in minimal amounts) exists.

Like any college town, Ann Arbor is a crime pit, but it's not typical big-city crime of the sort people associate with Detroit. You get a lot of students using and selling drugs, all manner of date rape and even gang rape, bike/purse/pickpocketings and other small thefts, public obnoxiousness by drunks, that sort of thing, but virtually no carjackings, bank robberies, gang activity, or that sort of thing. I only know of 2 serial killers who ever operated there; one is behind bars in Marquette and the other died a couple of years ago.

There are a number of web sites that will give you community crime statistics. Here are a few highlights from one of them:
2006 crimes per 100,00 people:
Murder: Ann Arbor = 0, Detroit = 47, National = 7
Forcible rape: Ann Arbor = 28, Detroit =67, National = 32
Robbery: Ann Arbor = 75, Detroit = 818, National = 205
Assault: Ann Arbor = 201, Detroit = 1486. National = 336
Burglary: Ann Arbor = 558, Detroit = 2050, National = 813
Larceny: Ann Arbor = 1875, Detroit = 2407, National = 2601
Vehicle theft: Ann Arbor = 153, Detroit = 2592, National = 501

As you can see, the crime rate in Ann Arbor is far below the crime rate in Detroit and even below the national average. Yes, crime does occur in Ann Arbor. Overall, it is a safe place to live - certainly safer than Detroit.
