Their vocal music program is also top notch, I think top in the State. Not sure about instrumental music, but watching the marching band cpmared to other schools- they cannot be slouches in that area either.

Teaching may be a weak spot, not sure. Their teachig program is not that large. Eastern is the big teaching school. They may or may not be one of the best, but they are certainly one of the biggest teaching programs as Eastern.
I should have said studio art. CCS and Meadowbrook are much better schools in Michigan.
And I've never heard of anyone going to UM for undergrad education As you alluded to, everyone always picks EMU

Thanks for the suggestions, Coldjensens. I agree that she needs to bump the EC's a bit, and getting involved in something on campus would be a smart thing to do.

The other part of this that I forgot to mention, is that we didn't have all of the admissions material in by the early decision deadline, and we were told that because she didn't meet the ED deadline, she wouldn't be hearing anything until next year, possibly as late as April, so we were quite surprised that we heard something back this early, even if it isn't a definite decision yet. I hope that's something to be encouraged about. Again, when our son's gf applied, she heard absolutely nothing between the time that she applied and the time that she received her rejection letter.

Only if 10th is better than 1st. And is twice as expensive at $24,500/yr.

TOTAL tuition at U-M is more than $12,000 per year (look at all those additional fees).
OK, OK, you are right. TOTAL tuition and fees at UM are $12,634/yr.

Don't know where you got your numbers. Tuition at UC is less than $12,000 per year, and they have a co-op program (started in 1906). U-M still doesn't have a co-op program.

Actually, Michigan has been ranked for several years as one of the best universities in the world:

University of Michigan ranked among top 20 universities in the world

If the percentage of accepted applicants continues to decline with the introduction of the Common Ap to the U of M, then it will get that much more selective and possibly climb in the ranks.

IMHO, it's a good time to be part of U of M!

Employer reputation only counts for 10% of the ranking???? Sounds like one of those academics ranking other academics surveys.

Since arguably the goal is to get a job - Michgan was ranked #6 in the country by recruiters. What was more interesting, however, was the others in the top 10. Some names surprised me. Goes to show a lot of the other "rankings" are mere fluff by acadamia to get insecure parents/students indebted into six figure levels. At my Firm, all graduates with bachelor's start at X and master's at X - so whether it was Cornell, Michigan or Alma - the pay is the same. Of course, the odds of landing that initial interview may differ based on alma matter, but nothing that isn't insurmountable.

$24,942 per year for Michigan residents.
It might be fine IF YOUR ARE IN OHIO. But the OP isn't.

Plenty of top schools don't offer co-op programs. Their students don't struggle to find internships or full-time jobs, so it really isn't necessary.

Lower ranked schools (Cincy, Kettering, ect) need to create some sort of competitive edge so that their students are (somewhat) attractive to employers. This is not needed at top schools.

You seem to know very little about anything other than your specific field (engineering) and even that seems limited to your experience at a specific company. Please stop feeding people garbage.

Exactly!

The total cost for a year at U of M Ann Arbor for an out of state student who obviously needs housing, is right around $50,000/year. Since we live about 20 min. from campus and are Michigan residents, our daughter could commute and pay right around $12,000/year:

Office of Financial Aid: Cost of Attendance

So for us, U of M Ann Arbor would actually be a huge bargain and much cheaper than just about any other option except for EMU or the University of Toledo, both of which are good schools in some ways, but neither of which holds a candle to the quality and reputation of U of M.
