Hi,

Are there private college preparatory schools that offer a rigorous academic program and varied extracurricular activities in or near Ann Arbor? Please note, I do not want to get into a debate of public vs private schools. I just wanted to know what options of private school are available. Thank you.

Gabriel Richard

IMHO those are the only two really worth mentioning in Washtenaw county. Everyone chooses public schools because at least 3 of the schools in the county are some of the best in the state.

Neither Greenhills nor Gabriel Richard offer much in extracurriculars compared to the public schools. They are quite small schools (Greenhills' total HS enrollment is less than half a single grade at Pioneer, GR is 2x bigger than Greenhills). At Dexter in the 90s, we played soccer against Greenhills, and had joint track meets against Gabriel Richard - i.e. their team was too small to hold a meet on their own, so it would be a 3 school meet.

If you want to drive a lot, you can send them to cranbrook However I think it is $36,000 per year per kid. You can board them at cranbrook too. Probably an extra charge for that.

I went to Gabriel Richard, don't be the person who sends your kid there. It's terrible, and it's gotten worse since I've left.

It has a reputation of being high, but it really isn't. Teachers give Cs to pass students at will and teachers play favorites all the time. I passed my senior math class with a B... I did not do 1 homework assignment, slept through every class, and eventually stopped brining my book altogether and slept every class.

A lot of people also commute to Grosse Pointe to send their kids to University-Liggett. It's an hour's drive, but kids come from as far away as Birmingham and even New Baltimore because the education is so good -- and they do bus the kids in from anywhere they live. The school has graduated captains of industry, Pultizer prizewinners and even Gilda Radner.

Bring your checkbook -- it's not a charity outfit!!!
