Hello I was recently accepted into UofM for graduate studies and will be moving soon from Ohio. I could really use any advice anyone has concerning safe and affordable neighborhoods and apartment complexes to live in. I would also like to start applying for jobs there as well my expertise include administrative work, management, marketing, advertising, non profit sectors, purchasing and retail as well. If anyone has any advice for applying for these types of positions while still out of the state I would really appreciate it and any leads at all.

Most places are "safe" in Ann Arbor if you don't condone drug and alcohol problems. However if your looking for affordable you might want to check Craigslist. I think shared rooms are probably a better go. I payed like 500 for a shared condo room and the dude was cool. Now I pay 1200 for rent and I'm not as happy as I was with the 500 shared room.

The only place to avoid if you don't want property damage is the Maple @ Pauline area.
The places to avoid if you don't want physical altercations are South University on a weekend during the school year between midnight and 2 am.

Option #1: Northwood. Grad/family housing on north campus. HUGE, between 1000 and 1100 apartments. Different sizes, different dates built, etc. 5 distinct time periods. Then you can hop on a bus and get to class, never moving your car or dealing with commuter lots...

Option #2: Apartments close to campus. Dominated by undergrads. Almost always a multi-family home with more than designed for number of apartments in it.

Option #3: There are a few nice complexes around Briarwood (State and Ann Arbor-Saline Rd at Eisenhower). You would have to pay for a parking pass, but it's not much. Much newer apartments. Not much more expensive than living downtown next to campus (often cheaper). Usually more than Northwood though.

Option #4: Ypsi. Cheaper. Not as nice in most places. It'll take some boots on the ground to get a feel of where you want to live there. Everywhere bad in Ypsi, looks bad. Good places in Ypsi look good. You'll know it when you see it.

You should look at Pheasant Run apartments or Hidden Valley Club apartments. Both are fairly cheap (for the area) and are on good bus lines (5 and 36 respectively). I believe Pheasant Run also gives a discount to UM students.
