We have previously lived in MI but new to AA. Our research leads us to the northern areas but wonder what the locals think in terms of safety, schools (not important as our rescues are our children), close to town if not in/around (not rural unless lake), established nice neighborhoods. Your input would be most helpful.

There are only 2 areas to avoid in Ann Arbor:
Maple south of Liberty
adjacent to campus

Some people aren't happy on Eisenhower south of I-94, but YMMV.

The rest of Ann Arbor is great.

If you expand to all of Washtenaw county, avoid Ypsi near EMU and Willow Run. HOWEVER, everything in Washtenaw county outside Ann Arbor and Ypsi is rural

Eisenhower is SOUTH of I-94...do you mean the apts on Ellsworth between Stone School & Platt that is south/west of 94?

There is also an apt complex on Pontiac Trail going north from downtown near Leslie Park that isn't good. Same issue that you mentioned about the Maple & Liberty area.

I agree that just about the remainder of AA is good. I would suggest the area around Burns Park between Hill, Packard, Stadium, and Washtenaw if cost is no object since it will cost you more to buy there. I hear this area is popular with U-M profs, etc, for the location since it is close enough to campus to bicycle but far enough removed, near the center of the city, the homes are very nice, lots of trees, etc.

Remember, Eisenhower crosses to the northside of 94 right before Ann Arbor ends
But really, between State and Ypsi is what I'm talking about, the co-ops, etc.
West of State there are some nice places, but that's outside the city limits and IIRC once it hits Ann Arbor-Saline rd it's Saline schools. And rural.

Thumbs up Thanks...yep...

...the Burns Park area has caught our attention. We are looking for a home, not an apt. and like privacy, trees, walkable neighborhood...maybe even close enough to town to walk off some calories after a good meal and just a little dessert within like 5-6 blocks??
