Hi,

I am in Ann Arbor now and I notice that the local time is the same as the east coast time. Isn't Ann Arbor in the central time zone? Have I missed something?

Nope, it is definitely in the Eastern time zone. The entire lower peninsula of Michigan is on eastern time. Central time begins near the outskirts of Chicago.

Always has been ET, always will be.

The sun sets here in Mass 45 minutes earlier than in Michigan though.

Illinois and Wisconsin are Central. Every state south of Michigan is Eastern (Indiana is weird though )

Would you ask this question if you were in Atlanta? Its west of Ann Arbor.

It's easy to understand why this can be confusing. Ann Arbor is a heck of a lot closer to Chicago than it is to NYC, Boston or Miami for example. The sun sets a lot "earlier" in the day in those truly Eastern cities. The sun sets "early" in the Central time zone for Chicago as well. Michigan happens to be near the western edge of the Eastern Time Zone. As soon as you cross into New Buffalo, Michigan from Michigan City, Indiana (near Chicago), you enter the Eastern Time Zone.

Odd Point of fact, Detroit Michigan is Geographically EAST of Atlanta. When looking on a map one would not assume this, which is why it's easy for people without knowledge to assume MI is in central time.

Unfortunately people without knowledge seem to be in the majority now by a significant percentage. It's also not too hard to look at a map most have the time zone lines or Google the question. I can understand people getting confused about Arizona & Indiana and daylight savings time, but come on people ...
