A personal favorite from travel to Europe was Leon Battista Alberti's Sant Andrea in Mantua, Italy. I took a day trip from Milan to see it. Architecturally significant due to beginning of transition in style. Someone did a nice brief video
I can only take so many though, as trying to see them all in a region during travel just makes them feel like museums and not as historical. Another favorite was in Venice I happened to be in bell tower of St George when the bells were striking noon and felt like Quasimodo. The beautiful marble floor with red / black / light gray pattern that looked like an MC Escher 3D optical illusion.
I was recently in Milwaukee and I was extremely impressed with their Basilica of St Josaphat! Photography doesn't do it justice. Here in the Bible Belt, we have a Protestant tradition that doesn't emphasize extremely fancy churches, so it was quite different than what I am used to.
Here's a pretty interesting blog that chronicles churches in Philadelphia...those that still exist, and a number that have been torn down. This author also has a Facebook page.

I think Detroit has an incredible selection of churches to oggle at due it's former high numbers of immigrants in the past.
Unfortunatly, a fair chunk are shuttered and abandonned now. And others are suprisingly open.
He is a small selection, but I highly recommend anyone that is interested to check it out more.
..... anyone who has been to to the Cathedral Basilica in St. Louis knows that it stands proudly with some of the most beautiful churches in the world. (Along with the rest of the city's inspiring architecture!)

Reviving this old thread.
Saw The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis this past week. I've seen many churches when I went
to Europe and wish I could have seen more however, I knew once I entered past the main entrance
I was entering something very special. I stood there in awe.
83,000 square feet of mosaic art (some so realistic I thought they were paintings - Byzantine).
41.5 million pieces of glass tiles which took 76 years to complete.
St. Katherine Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Arden Hills, MN
(Lost the photo in my previous post for some reason)
