Most "architect" now, simply cut design elements out of a catalog and paste them together to make a new design. Unless you are looking for some sort of standard cookie cutter design, you will want to find someone who can actually imagine a design and draw it accurately. Those are hard to find. The only suggestion I have is to do a lot of research so you know enough to discern when they are FOS and interview them extensively. Not some rote set of pre-written questions, but sit down with them and have a discussion about architecture. What do they like/dislike about being an architect. What are their goals in designing a house. What design are they most proud of?
