Ive recently developed an interest in architecture and I need some good beginner books to guide me. I hoped that someone could recommend a book that wouldnt be too heavy with technical terms like a textbook. For the most part I want a book that helps me to draw houses (floor plans, exteriors, etc) and some historical context to explain why they were set up this way (like I know that Georgian and Victorian houses had kitchens tucked at the back of the house rather than a focal point at the front like a modern kitchen). Im most interested in everything from Tudor to Victorian houses. Does anyone have any books they particularly enjoyed?

The "bible" of learning and understanding about domestic architecture in the United States is without a doubt A Field Guide to American Houses by Virginia Savage McAlester. Now in its 2nd edition, where it includes an examination of neighborhood/city development and more post war information it really is a wonderful resource.

Not so much a plan guide, though it does have the basics in plan development of houses through the ages, but it fully explores all aspects of domestic housing form and detailing and how different styles evolved and drew from the past and changing lifestyles to become incorporated into house design and trends.

It is worth every penny!
