Default relocating to Wickenburg from NJ: Where should a single 20-something live?

Hi all:
I've got a job coming up in january for 6 months (which may turn into something longer). I'm from NJ: 11 miles out of NYC. I'm used to cities, people, and all things packed and crammed together.
The job is in Wickenburg, but I'm not sure I can live there. I'm nervous of how rural the town is. What are other good alternatives?
I was looking at Surprise: it's in between both Wickenburg and Phoenix. I'm in my late 20s, single (woman) and would prefer to live in Phoenix (or scottsdale maybe) to be with other 20s/30s but the commute is too long. Im basically going off the fact that Surprise has a Target and a Trader Joes, which equals better living for me. Thoughts?

How about finding some place to rent in Wickenburg so you'll be close to work. Then commute into Phoenix for your social life. I would think that would be a lot less stressful than commuting every day for work. And who knows, you might find you like the laid-back, small-town life. You can always move into the city later if you really hate it. And consider yourself lucky, lots of folks would love to find work in Wickenburg. It's a cool little town!

I have to agree with kdog on this one. The commute from Wickenburg to Surprise is about 30-35 miles (depending where in Wickenburg and where in Surprise). Too far to hassle with. The commute to anywhere else is ridiculous.

Stay in Wickenburg and visit the valley. Once the newness of living here wears off you will be staying home a lot anyway. Whats the difference if you stay home in Wickenburg or Surprise or Phoenix?

Say goodbye to "'cities, people, and all things packed and crammed together".

I would have to agree with what the previous posters have said. Rent a place in Wickenburg, there are many available, and commute to Surprise/Phoenix for the "social life." You never know though you just might find Wickenburg to be "social" enough for you. Just don't look for it to be like NJ and try not to change it into NJ or NYC or you will not get along to well with those who live in Wickenburg.

About 50 mins each way between Wickenburg and Surprise. Easily doable.

I too have to agree with the previous posters...Wickenburg is a quaint small town. I've been there many times and find the locals friendly. There are some pretty cool local establishments in town for night life, too, though they're predominently limited to weekends. It's definitely laid back. Yoou might find you like it better than the hussle of the Phoenix metro area. Thumbs up on this one from me.

Absolutely! What earthly reason is there to live in a congested, dirty, stressful cesspool of humanity (aka "a city") if you have no need of a job there?

Just trying to put myself in OP's shoe (too difficult for me since I am not in 20s, not single, not a woman etc). If you can handle the driving (thinking like 1 hour driving 1 way) then Surprise might not be that bad. For most part this should be rural driving with some windy/uphill road (Hwy 60) near Wickenburg. When I lived in NJ a long time ago - driving 1 hour or more is very common with conjested roads. Then you might get back by 5/6pm and still have time for malls, shopping, dinner/movies with friends etc. Better still during weekends. More chance of meeting 20/30s crowds. Others can provide more info on night life in Tempe/Phoenix/Scottsdale.

I think that it will quite a big change from city life NJ/NYC to small town of 6K. Maybe best to initially stay in a motel for 2 weeks or so and see if travelling is an issue. Get advice/opinion from the HR of your future company.

The local paper in Wickenburg might give you more info - you can also get info on apt rentals there.

Maybe after a few months you might discover that you love small town life instead! (or not)

I personally cannot stand small town life and would never desire to live in wickenburg - however, as a single 20-something i'm not sure if I would of targeted surprise either

given the circumstances I'd probably choose to live in wickenburg, enjoy the nothing commute to my job and realize that there isn't a whole lot going on during the week anyhow and just focus on starting my career

on weekends I'd probably look at hotels in the metro and just stay where I want to socialize, catch a game, etc .... maybe do this once a month

not sure living in suprise would offer enough to warrant a long commute during the week (making it harder to do anything during the week - so you might as well have a short commute and do nothing during the week)

on weekends, pending on what you like to do, you're still not exactly close to any of the hotspots .... surprise has a few nice things, but not a ton of variety .... also, DUI laws out here are super strict, so it's best to not even test it going between surprise and scottsdale, tempe or even the arrowhead or westgate areas

The commute from Surprise is doable. Surprise is a very nice suburb of Phoenix. However, Wickenburg is a pretty nice town, too. Maybe rent in Wickenburg first and see if you like it. If not, then move to Surprise.
