Rush Hour and Drive Time
What time is rush hour? I drove in the area on a recent house hunting trip and noticed a lot of traffic at 5-6am. Is that normal? Also, how long does it take to drive from Shea Blvd and 101 to the core of downtown Phoenix during normal rush hour traffic?

The only people that I can think of that would be out on the roads by 5 am would either be people going to or from work relieving (or being relieved from a graveyrd shift from somewhere) or construction workers, as we have been trying to beat the heat lately.

I'm estimating about 45 minutes.

A lot of people do early shifts, such as 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM or so. It is not that uncommon in the Phoenix area.
However, the majority of rush hour (in general, in and out of downtown PHX) would most likely be from 6:30 AM to around 8:00 AM, and from 4:00 PM to around 5:30 PM.

I know my husband's out the door in the AM time kept getting earlier and earlier in an attempt to beat the ever increasing traffic. Leaving home at 5:30am or so became the norm. Problem is... no matter how early he got to the office, his leave work time never seemed to adjust much. Not too bright eh?

What about leaving the 51/Union Hills area going to S 11th St off the 17/60. I can either take the 17 or the 51. I have to be at work by 9am. Mapquest says 20 minutes, what about rush hour?

I live in the same area, the 51 slows way down after the Lincoln exit, because the speed drops to 55 and everyone freaks out and hits their brakes.
You can shoot down to camelback, over to 7th st, and down to wherever you need to go. I wouldl guess 30 minutes tops.
For the OP, rush hour starts around 6am and goes until around 8am in most parts of town.
