I've thrived in Arizona for many years without air conditioning or swamp cooler in home or air in vehicle. Granted I don't live in Phoenix -- though I did for a couple years with my same New York truck!

My apartment is luckily sheltered from the brunt of the sun. I open everything up at night and close everything at first light. I've made neat window and patio door inserts of foil-backed foam. I shower, cook, wash dishes, and use electric lights in the evenings to avoid producing extra heat during the day.

I'm semi-retired and self-employed, working outside. In the summer I work late afternoons to evenings to beat the heat. As I warm up the air temperature cools down. Even 100 degrees at this elevation cools to comfortable by dark. That is, if one is away from pavement, which exudes heat for hours longer.

It's not a lifestyle that would appeal to everyone but it works for me!

You know you can put a window ac unit in for about $100. No reason to suffer.
