Hi Azloafer
I have to agree with you on this one about Douglas. There are not to many border towns that look very attractive and this is certainly one of them. Most of it to me look like a dump. There were some of the old charms like their old Hotel in the middle and some of the old architecture of yesteryear. But all in all I would never move there and there is absolutely no comparisson to Sierra Vista.
The crime there would be obvious in run down town and the Border crime would make me nervous the worst of all. Especially with all the noteriety about the Illegals and the immigration problem. However this has been going on for years with the crime committed against Ranchers and Farm families. As far back in the 70s from what i can remember. All you would have to do is research old newspaper articles on the subject.
Cheers , Kevin ( bluepacific )

Sierra Vista linked to leukemia deaths
Does anyone know if the clusters of leukemia cases have increased or
decreased? I was looking forward to my hubbys job transfer to SV but read a
little on the net of the higher rate of cancer there in both adults and children .... and now im not sure that i want to put my children at risk for leukemia. (water and air quality) Any info would be appreciated!

Possible upcoming move to Sierra Vista and I just read thru comments on greatschools.org (maybe .com) about Buena HS...sounds like it's overcrowded...any ideas as to building another high school in the near future?

Where do people get their info?
I currently live in Douglas and work in Sierra Vista, so I see both cities pretty regularly. I'm confused by all the reports of rampant crime in Douglas, because I never see it or hear of it. Yet, there has been a huge increase in crime in Sierra Vista, especially drug and gang-related crime. Just be careful where you buy a house. I've also heard that their high school has a lot of drugs and crime. The local paper (svherald.com) has done several articles on the rising crime recently.
Otherwise, Sierra Vista is a nice small town. It has the chain stores and a small mall and Tucson is only a little over an hour away. To me, it lacks a little character as it is mostly strip malls, but there are usually lots of child and family activities and outdoor activities nearby. It is a little conservative - mostly military and seniors who refuse to acknowledge they are within a few miles of another country. But other than that, not a bad place if you are an interesting person who can entertain yourself. I would definitely recommend taking the job. Good luck!

Wow...Blue Pacific?
This is off-topic for this post but...I spent a summer in Sweden in the mid-1980's and I found it to be a gorgeous country with warm, gracious and friendly people who loved Americans. Then again, that was then and this is now but I am still amazed. Must have been an entirely different Sweden . Or...different people's attitudes and opinions, perhaps.

My take on Sierra Vista
My husband and I visited Sierra Vista two weeks ago and I must say - I could live there...beautiful mountains and sunny every day...I keep checking the weather forecast and where I live we go from 70 and sunny one day to 41 and sleet the next...I'm sick of it. Husband got offered a job, and we're most likely going to take it...lots of changes in the next few months but I'm ready. The only drawback I'm seeing so far is the overcrowded conditions at Buena HS. We met a guidance counselor and the Ath. Director and got more of the low-down on the school. Too bad Az seems to not care too much about their educational system. It's obvious to me that they should have built two smaller high schools. Buena is huge compared to the area towns' high schools and can't evenly compete with them..so they have to travel to Tucson and Phoenix for the same size schools...yet Benson HS, Tombstone HS, Bisbee HS, etc are all within 25-30 miles but they're tiny in comparison to Buena. We'll be putting our son at Buena (he's going to be a sophomore) and we'll definitely be keeping close tabs on him...he's a good kid and we want to keep him that way.
So, if you live in SV and can recommend a good church and good restaurants and good neighborhoods - send it along. We're probably coming your way!

Are there anyone in the Sierra Vista or surrounding areas that are into "green" living? I am curious to know if anyone is doing solar or water catchment? How about poeople growing their own food?

Yes, there are many, but there are many who don't or have no clue. There is a strawbale house building email, if you are interested in doing that. (You can get on the list and help others while learning and then use it to recruit people to your own work parties). Many people have gardens, especially outside of SV, there isn't as much solar or wind as one might think, but its there. There are a few organizations that help promote water conservation and solar uses, as well as a couple companies that sell catchment basins.

I am going to be moving to Arizona to work in Douglas and live in Sierra Vista. What is the commute like? Please let me know if you have any suggestions. I don't have to live in Sierra Vista, I just haven't been able to find an apartment that allows pets in Douglas or Bisbee. Thanks.

Off hand I can only guess about an hours drive. The driving is fairly easy since most of the road is a straight shot. Good move to live in Sierra Vista. I never found much of anything attractive about Douglas with the exception of the interior of the old downtown Gadsden hotel.
